| TheBeerScout's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
I was working in a restaurant when I first started hearing about the Atkins Diet. It seemed like everyone who came in ordered with these high maintenance restrictions. I was hearing all about it but not wanting to jump into something I didn't know enough about I bought one of his books. I read the book from end to end and decided it wasn't for me after a trial few days and contemplating what I'd read.
The premise of the diet is carbohydrates are used in your body for energy, unused carbohydrates turn into stored fat in your body, therefore, no carbohydrate intake equals your body using stored fat for energy.
The hardest part for me with this diet is when a person goes on most diets they are
1) wanting a diet with a start and a finish, so they have something to look forward to, the end
2)want a diet that if they cheat a little they can just resume the diet
No such luck on either account with the Atkins Diet. The diet is supposed to be a new way of healthy eating with a crash course beginning. The first 2 weeks are absolutely no carbohydrates that essentially gives your body a feeling of shock which is called ketosis. Ketosis is the process that is supposed to trick your body into using stored body fat for energy. The problem with this that was stated in number 2 is that you can't cheat. If you cheat you are back to the drawing board and you have to start all over and everything you had already done means nothing. That is just a little too much pressure for me.
Don't get me wrong if you can't do this diet I highly recommend it and hats off to your will power. I also think this is a drastic diet for drastic measures. If you are one of those people constantly looking to take off those ten extra pounds I don't think this is for you. I would go as far as to say I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking to lose less than 30 pounds.
I personally know someone who was seriously over-weight and so far has lost more than 170 pounds, has kept it off and is still losing weight with the new overall diet change.
All in all, this is a serious diet not to be taken lightly and I strongly recommend doing research and reading the book for yourself before deciding if this diet is right for you.
