| kristalrose's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
I decied to try this diet after some extensive internet research on "Low Carb" diets. This one seemed the easiest because the do's and don't were simple. What the dieter can or cannot eat is easily laid out. It is touted by it's followers as a wonderful way of life, an effective way of staying healthy, even something that can protect you from getting diabetes in the long run.
So, excited to be on the road to fitness, I started the diet. I found it so restrictive that I felt starved all the time. I also felt tired and drained of all energy. I was told in a Low Carb newsgroup that this was normal for the first few days. After two weeks, I still had no energy.
I did loose a few pounds on the diet. It totaled six pounds in two weeks. As I researched further, I discovered the reason from an article written by a nutritionist. She said that of course one will loose weight when they deny themselves important food groups, like fruit and bread.
As soon as I went off the diet, I gained the six pounds back plus another few for good measure. This, in my opinion is just a fad diet that contributes to yo-yo dieting, which is more dangerous than being overwieght. I am now watching my calories and fat grams. No, the weight is not falling off me, but I feel better. That, to me, is the most important thing. My advice, for what it's worth: Don't listen to the faithful followers of the Atkins Diet without first reading the cons. Another tip, the newsgroup is not very helpful either. When I asked questions, I was either told to read the book, or made to feel like a complainer.
