A friend of mine came across this diet in a magazine at a doctor's office, of all places. Both of us, having gained weight post-children, decided we might as well give it a try. My sister soon joined us. Why not try? The claims were incredible!! You will loose at least 10 pounds and possibly 17 pounds in one week. A feeling of "well-being" as never before is what you will experience. This diet supposedly cleans your body of impurities and gives you a lot of energy. I believe there are several variations to this diet. This is the one we used.
THE SOUP
The basic idea of this diet is that you burn more calories than you take in. You put your body on a "fast fat burning" schedule. The main staple of the Cabbage Soup Diet is , of course, the cabbage soup. The soup is made as follows:
Ingredients
6 large green onions 1-2 cans of tomatoes
1 large head of cabbage 2 green peppers
1 bunch of celery 1 pkg. Lipton soup mix
The vegetables are cut into bite size pieces and covered with water. All the ingredients are added. The soup is to be simmered on the stove until the vegetables are tender.
This soup smells wonderful while it is cooking(if you like cabbage that is). At first, it tastes delicious. But after about 10 bowls in 2 days I could barely stand the sight of it. This soup can be eaten anytime that you are hungry(which is pretty often on this diet). It has no calories. The more soup you eat, the more weight that you are supposed to loose.
DRINKS
No alcohol or carbonated drinks(including diet drinks) are allowed. Instead drink water, unsweetened tea, black coffee, unsweetened fruit juice, cranberry juice and skim milk. Drinking plenty of fluids each day is highly recommended.
SCHEDULE
This is the weekly schedule of what you can eat each day of this diet. Each day is different.
DAY 1: Eat only the soup and fruits, no bananas.
DAY 2: Eat the soup and all veggies, except beans, peas and corn. Eat until you are stuffed with fresh, raw or canned vegetables. As a reward for supper, A baked potato with butter.
DAY 3: Eat the soup, fruits and veggies. No baked potatoes today.
** If you have not cheated you should have lost around 5-7 pounds by now!**
DAY 4: Eat the soup, up to 3 bananas and skim milk. These will lessen your craving for sweets by providing potassium, carbohydrates, proteins and calcium.
DAY 5: Eat the soup, 10-20 oz. of beef (skinless chicken breast can be substituted for the beef), and up to 6 fresh tomatoes. Drink 6-9 glasses of water to wash away the uric acid in you body.
DAY 6: Eat the soup, beef(2-3 steaks allowed) or chicken, and vegetables. No baked potatoes.
DAY 7: Eat the soup, brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice and veggies.
WARNINGS
1. If you loose more than 15 lbs., stay off of the diet for 2 days before resuming.
2. If the soup is eaten alone for a definate period malnutrition will occur.
3. Go off the diet for at least 24 hours before drinking alcohol.
4. Bowl movements will change. Eat 1 cup of bran or fiber daily.
NO-NO's: fried foods, bread, alcohol, carbonated drinks
OUR RESULTS
I tried this diet 3 separate times. The longest I have been able to stay on it was for 5 days(where was my will power?). My friend managed 3 days. My sister completed the whole week. My friend lost about 3 pounds, it didn't stay off. For me I was hungry throughout most of the 5 days. The soup was not very filling and tasted terrible after a couple of days. I did feel more energetic, but I don't know if it was due to the diet or the edgeiness of hunger? I didn't feel the "well-being" that this diet claims, a little grumpy maybe if anything.
On the fifth day when I finally ate, I felt pretty good!!
I did end up loosing 7 pounds. It stayed off for about 3 hours! LOL Seriously, it was about 3 days I had my new figure. My sister lost 12 pounds, it took her about 5 days to gain it back. She was even trying continue a lowfat diet. For us the weight loss was very temporary. I wonder how much of the loss was water? Probably a good bit!
The only way I would ever recommend this diet is for someone that wants to drop 5-10 pounds quickly for an upcoming event, such as a reunion, wedding or special date. I may also recommend it for anyone addicted to cabbage!! This in my opinion is not a permanent weight loss plan. I would never recommend it as such!
