Pros:Works well as a quick fix, can use salt in the soup.
Cons:Temporary weight loss, tastes gross, causes lots of gas.
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a quick fix, this diet will shed water weight in a week or less, but the soup tastes icky and causes lots of gas.
As a size 7/8, whoís forever trying to whittle herself down to a size 6, Iíve followed the Cabbage Soup Diet a few times in the last couple years. Most recently, I was following the diet five weeks ago. I looked at the calendar and realized that my wedding was in two weeks and Iíd really like to drop ten pounds before then. In reaction, I threw together a batch of the ďfat-burningĒ brew and warned my husband (the gas that results is pretty bad).

The Cabbage Soup Diet claims that you can lose up to 15 pounds in one week. Each time Iíve followed it, Iíve lost between 8 and 10 pounds, but I usually never make it through the whole week. I normally end up feeling very dizzy around the third or fourth day, and give up by the fifth. By then, Iím usually happy with what Iíve lost and return to ďnormalĒ eating. Yes, itís true itís just water weight that you lose, but if youíre not picky about what kind of weight your losing and you need to lose it before that upcoming get-together with your high school boyfriend, the Cabbage Soup Diet might be the quick-fix youíre looking for.
You can pretty much find the Cabbage Soup Diet anywhere on the internet, and although it varies very slightly from source to source, it generally looks like this:
Ĺ head of cabbage
2 green peppers
6 large onions
1 bunch of celery
1 or 2 can of tomatoes-diced
1 package of onion soup mix
1 48 oz can of V-8 juice
(I usually add carrots also, about three cut up)
spices (I spice the hell out of it)
Youíre allowed to eat all the soup you want whenever you want, plus the following:
Day ONE- Any fruit you want except bananas
Day TWO- All the vegetables you want plus a baked potato with butter for dinner
Day THREE- All the fruit and veggies you want, but no potato
Day FOUR- Up to eight bananas, all the skim milk you want
Day FIVE- 10-20 ounces of beef (or lean chicken or fish), 6 tomatoes
Day SIX- All the beef (chicken or fish) and vegetables you want
Day SEVEN- Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables
The soup does fill you up, but itís mostly with gas. The soup tastes about as good as it looks, which is akin to the remains of a garbage disposal mixed with some water. Each time I make it, I add curry powder, garlic, salt and pepper, and anything else spice-wise that will jazz it up a bit. Otherwise itís too bland.
If you do decide to start this diet, be advised that many who start it complain of dizziness and gas after a couple days of following it. I think itís pretty smart to stick to a low-fat diet normally, but in a pinch and if you can stomach it, this diet does the trick.
