| paulinehughes's Full Review: Cabbage Soup Diet |
I need to lose weight, badly! I was given The Fat Burning Cabbage Soup Diet by a friend, and I decided to try it based on two things: First, it promised me I would lose up to 15 pounds in a week; and second, it claimed that this diet comes from a hospital and was designed for heart patients about to undergo surgery who needed to lose weight quickly. This sounded like it was a medically approved diet and would offer quick weight loss. I felt I had nothing to lose.
Here's the Diet:
THE FAT BURNING CABBAGE SOUP
6 Large Green Onions (Try Spanish Onions for more flavor)
1 Large bunch Celery
1 or 2 Cans of Tomatoes (I use 2, and I blend them first)
1 Large Cabbage (I use Red Cabbage for flavor and color)
2-3 Green Peppers
1 Package Lipton Onion Soup
Season with Salt, Pepper, Parsley, etc...
Optional Bouillon Cubes
You will need a BIG pot. Cut the vegetables in small to medium pieces, cover with water. Boil fast for 10 minutes, cut to simmer and continue cooking until all vegetables are tender. You can freeze this soup.
Eat the soup anytime, all the time, as much as you want. The more soup you eat, the more weight you will lose. Fill a thermos and take it with you to work.
THE DIET
Day 1: All fruits, except Bananas. As much as you want. Stuff yourself. Eat the soup at least once.
Day 2: All Vegetables; Have a Baked Potato with Butter, one only, and only for this day. Eat the soup!
Day 3: Mix Day 1 & 2, but no Potato.
After 3 days, if you have followed the diet you should see a weight loss, and feel more energized.
Day 4: Bananas and Skimmed Milk. Eat up to 8 Bananas - High in Potassium. If you are like me and not a milk drinker, try substituting Non-Fat Yogurt.
Day 5: Beef and Tomatoes. 10-12 Ounces of Beef, and as many as 6 fresh Tomatoes. Drink lots of water.
Day 6: Beef and Vegetables. All you want - No Baked Potato.
Day 7: Brown Rice; Unsweetened Fruit Juices and Vegetables.
Stuff yourself everyday with the daily allowed foods, and you MUST eat the soup at least once EVERY DAY!
This diet is said to be Fat Burning, and can change your bowel movements. The copy of the diet I was given said that after three days you may need to have a cup of wheat bran and fiber.
Other rules: NO BREAD; NO ALCOHOL; NO SOFT DRINKS, NOT EVEN DIET; NO FRIED FOODS
You CAN drink: Water; Unsweetened Teas, Black Coffee and Unsweetened Fruit Juices
You also MAY substitute Broiled or Baked Chicken on one of the Beef days.
Eat, Eat, Eat the Soup!
HOW DID I DO?
I have gone on this one week diet three times, over a three month period last year.
I LOVE THE SOUP! After a little experimentation, I found that using Red Cabbage not only adds flavor to the soup, but the color is wonderful, giving the soup a rich Burgundy color, making it so much more appetizing. Also, After the soup is cooked I transfer it to Tupperware bowls, and I take my hand-held blender and I blend until it is almost smooth, sort of an applesauce consistency. For me flavor is important, but so is the look and presentation of my food. I would eat this soup just for the pleasure of it.
This is not an easy diet to stick with. The only way I did was because I kept telling myself - It's only ONE week! So I took it on as a mission, one day at a time.
I don't believe in dieting. I have tried them all over the years, and I know that only a permanent lifestyle change will work and keep the weight off. That said, going on this diet was for me just a way to quick-start my system. Get it working and clean it out. I did lose weight, 15 pounds the first time, less the second (5) and third (7) times, but I will admit, I cheated a bit the second and third time around. I lost significant inches all over though. I felt great after each week, energized and cleaned out!
This diet had me going to the bathroom, it got my bowels and my whole body seemed to start rumbling and grumbling. Not pleasant but it really made me feel better. By the end of the diet I really did feel like I had more energy.
There are a lot of things I didn't like. I hated Day 7, the brown rice was way too bland... So I found a flavored rice the second time I did the diet. I also was not fond of the Bananas only day.
The first time I did the diet I felt a bit weak after Day 3. I wasn't eating enough. Others I have talked to told me the same story. I hadn't prepared properly for this diet. You have to eat your fruits and vegetables. This means stocking up on lots and lots, and a variety of fresh and tasty fruits and vegetables. Also, you have to eat the soup, as much as you can.
The second time around I shopped well, and I bought a better variety of fruits and vegetables. I also ate more, so I felt a lot better about things the second time around. Another little trick and a bit of cheating, I put a few croutons in my soup, just for texture.
The best day is Day Two, when you get to have that Baked Potato with Butter. Boy do your savor the flavor of that potato.
I also found, as predicted in the diet sheet I got, after day two I no longer desired or even liked coffee. But as soon as the diet was over, I couldn't wait to have my breakfast bagel and my coffee again.
This is not a diet that is recommended for an extended period of time. I would recommend it as a way to kick-start a new regime, lose some quick weight, and clean out your system. After I was on this diet for a week, I found an appreciation for fruits and vegetables and for eating healthy.
Whether this soup is actually fat burning or not, I am not qualified to answer that, but I recommend it for its' flavor alone, and I do feel it gets your bowels moving and it makes you pee...sorry but it does. It's the Cabbage I think!
I have several friends who have gone on this diet with me. They had mixed results. One friend only lost five pounds and she was disappointed. Another only lost three. I think they miss the point. It is all about healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle, over the long term. So don't go on this diet looking for a miracle. There aren't any. But, as a way to start eating healthier, eliminate the junk foods for a while, clean out your system , and finally, just to be proud of yourself because you stuck it out for the whole week, I will recommend The Fat Burning Cabbage Soup Diet.
