| acongojada's Full Review: Cabbage Soup Diet |
I have seen this diet on the Internet in newsgroups, homepages, and just about everywhere diets are talked about. This diet was used for people who were preparing for surgery, but in this review, my opinions are referring to the use of this diet, as a "crash" diet, or for people who just want to lose weight.
The Diet
The cabbage soup diet has some variations that I have seen but primarily, it consists of a soup made from cabbage, celery, soup mix, bouillon cubes, and vegetable juice. You may eat this soup whenever you like, and then each day you are allowed additional foods. all of this lasts for seven days. It goes a little something like this;
Day 1 - Every fruit you want except bananas(+soup)
Day 2 - All the veggies you want, baked potato w/butter for dinner(+soup)
Day 3 - Combine day 1 and two but no potato(+soup)
Day 4 - Up to six bananas, all the skim milk you want(+soup)
Day 5 - 10 to 20 ounces of beef, a can of tomatoes, 6-8 glasses of(+soup)
Day 6 - All the beef and vegetables you want(+soup)
Day 7 - Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables(+soup)
Will you lose weight?
This popular diet promises to help you lose weight quickly. Some versions claim you can lose 17 pounds in one week. I am sure if you did stick to this diet, you would lose weight because of reduced caloric intake and the fact that you probably would lose a lot of water weight initially.
Is this a good diet to try?
In my opinion, there are several reasons why this is not a good idea. First, going on a "crash" diet for a week may allow you to lose a few unwanted pounds, but what happens when the week is up? I can tell you what would happen for me. I would be running as fast as I could to get some ice cream, or one of my other favorite foods that I had been craving while feeling deprived on this diet. How many times have you heard of people losing weight while using methods like this, and then gaining all the weight back, sometimes even additional pounds, after going off the diet?
Second, It cuts you out of many of the main food groups that provide sound nutrition. You do need fats, grains, and regular sources of protein. This whole diet does nothing to teach you how to eat healthy or maintain a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the diet has also prompted some complaints of gas, nausea and light-headedness. Oh yippee! What fun!!
In spite of the diet's un-healthyness, I'm sure it couldn't hurt anyone who is relatively healthy by going on it for a week, but why would you want to? If anyone could keep the weight off after going on this fad diet, then it might be worth it for a week. But knowing myself, and how I am, the odds are stacked against me with this plan.
