I've never really had a weight problem until I got pregnant. Isn't that everyones story? I gained about fifty pounds with my pregnancy and only lost about twenty after the baby's arrival. This adds up to a thirty pound weight difference from before I was pregnant.
I wanted to lose weight, but it wasn't an urgent need for me until I saw a picture of myself at a friends wedding. I was shocked by what I saw. Something had to be done. As I love the Oprah Winfrey show, I saw a show that had the founders of this diet. It sounded too good to be true. Even Oprah thought so, but I thought I might as well give it a try.
My husband and I both went on it. Basically, the diet consists of eating fiber, which would be your vegetables, and protein for two of your meals. It's your choice which two. I chose breakfast and lunch. For your third meal, supper for me, you eat a salad to start it off. Once the salad is finished you eat equal portions of fiber, protein and carbohydrate. You can eat as much as you want, but all three have to be in equal amounts. An example supper could be a piece of chicken, vegetable and a roll. This is to be eaten within an hours time and then no more carbohydrates for the rest of the day. A short list of carbohydrates would be: anything sweet, bread, potatoes, milk and so on. If you're serious about this diet I would recommend buy the "Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Progam" book written by Dr's. Heller.
It was difficult the first few days for me since I'm a sugar-aholic. Before the diet, I would wake up over-joyed if I knew there was something sweet waiting for me. After a couple days on the diet my sweet tooth disappeared. It's no lie. I didn't crave it and I didn't really want it. Watching other people eat it didn't bother me either. I lost about seven pounds the first week, then a couple pounds a week thereafter. All together I lost eighteen pounds.
Unfortunately, we went on vacation and I fell off the wagon. I started back on the sweets and before I knew it I gained about five pounds back.
To me, it wasn't really restrictive if you like vegetables. I'm not the greatest vegetable eater, so I did feel, at times, that I ate a lot of the same things. That wasn't really the fault of the diet. Whether it has health risks, I don't know. I personlly think it isn't all that bad if you're balanced in what you choose to eat. I know several people that swear by it based on their medical history. They were able to get off blood pressure medicine and lower their insuline.
I would recommend this diet to others. Especially ones who crave sweets like I do. The reason you crave is because your intake of carbohydrates is to great. Think of it as life change, not really a diet. But as always please check with your physician before starting any diet.
