For a lifetime dieter like myself, the Hawaii Diet seems like a dream come true. "Eat what you want"?? How can that be? The answer to that question may not be as cut and dry as it sounds. For me, the Hawaii Diet did not work at all. But then again, nothing else did either.
First, I should mention that I am a recovering anorexic. That played a major role in this diet not working for me. The way that this diet plan work is that you are able to eat whatever your want. Whether it is fruits and veggies or meats and fried food. But, your total caloric daily intake cannot exceed 2,500. That right there is the catch of this dream diet. If you eat something extremely high in calories, it could be your only food for the day.
Although you are permitted to eat whatever you like, you must take into consideration the amount of calories involved. The Hawaii Diet teaches you how to calculate what you are eating in terms of calories, fat and carbohydrates. It is very similar to the system that a weight watcher incorporates. You are allowed a certain number of calories (like their points) each day. You calculate the amount of calories in each of the foods that you eat (like the scales weight watchers use). When your total reaches 2,500 you have used up your daily allowance of calories. That is it, it's that simple.
Seems easy enough right? Sounds like a fair amount of calories doesn't it? Well, just for an idea of where calories can quickly go, In a McDonalds supersized #3 (quarter pounder) value meal there is almost 2,500 calories!! Learning exactly what foods you can eat within your daily limit is part of this diet.
My problem with the Hawaii diet was that it wasn't like your typical diets. When we all think of diets we think of "not eating". Hawaii diet is not about starvation, but about teaching you how to eat in a healthy manner. How was this a problem to me? I was looking for a quick weight loss and eating did not seem like a way of accomplishing it.
Another problem I ran into with the Hawaii Diet is that there are no requirements for exercise. In most diet regimes exercise is crucial, with this diet sit-ups were not necessary. The Hawaii Diet is about changing your eating habits and to teach you exactly what you are putting in your body (something that an anorexic knows all too well).
There are no scheduled weekly meetings and no weigh-in's. You are basically on your own for this diet. This program is cheaper than most diet programs available. I paid a little over $100 for my "membership".
Although I did lose weight while on the Hawaii Diet it was not due entirely to this plan. I learned about this program through a friend at work. She sold me my membership so I never was in any contact with people from this company.
I believe that this diet can work for others who are serious about changing their eating habits to maintain a healthy weight. I do not think this diet would be beneficial to those whom are extremely overweight and trying to lose pounds. Losing weight is difficult without supervision and support.
