An Update on NS (Reply to this comment)
by joisme
Just a quick update...
it's been a few years since I was on Nutrisystem, and after wedding planning, job changes, and change of habitat, I eventually gained the weight back. I'm currently back on nutrisystem to "retrain" myself on portion control. I know and read about portion control, but I am the type of person that is stubborn and needs to experience it again in order for it to really sink in.

Alot of the foods have been reformulated and are alot less "slimy" now than they were before. Almost all of them still have that "health food" feeling to it -- the bars and pastries are gritty, you can taste the soy subsituting for meat, etc. My guess is that NS has stopped using that soy/protein formula that gave every "wet" food a slimy texture. I just had the meatloaf & potatoes yesterday night. The meatloaf, well, DID taste like meatloaf, but not as good as, say, homemade, Boston-Market, or even those frozen entree types. The mashed potatoes were an unattractive shade of grayish-brown --- I could only equate it to the color of street-slush that forms 2 days after a snowstorm. My husband commented that it was probably the gravy taste blended already with the potatoes, and he was right. If I were blind, the potatoes tasted like they had a pinch of gravy already added to it. Still had a gritty after-taste though.

One complaint I still have is THE EXPLODING FOOD. The entress that come in the little tin containers have a tendency to pop in the microwave, even if you haven't placed it in there for that long. The average cook time for these are ~1-1.5 mins. I have followed the directions exactly -- remove tin lid, replace plastic lid, then put in microwave. I've even given the food a little stir to evenly distribute the food and rid the air bubbles if they are inside. Within maybe 20-30 seconds, the container starts jumping and making loud popping noises inside the nuker. I'll pause it, re-stir, and put back in. 3x already, this has still been unsuccessful and my microwave ends up looking like I threw a food grenade in there.

I called up NS to get a replacement or at least a credit, claiming that I shouldn't have to go through all that trouble for what was marketed as "a convenient diet solution". The first rep didn't seem to care that they were about to lose me as a customer. The second rep I spoke to (after demanding I speak to a manager, but I strongly believe they passed the buck to another rep) made it seem like it was my fault. She said "we've never had that complaint, and it's the first time we've ever heard anything like that". I pointed out that this is a continual complaint that is clearly highlighted in their Members' Community Forums (online bulletin boards). The rep still insisted that they never get complaints about this. I suggested that she check the boards, because I was staring at over 200 complaints as I was talking to her. She put in an order for replacements immediately.

I've only been back on it for about 2.5 weeks. I've had lots of what would be considered "cheater days", but I planned on using the diet to supplement "real eating days" for those times I wouldn't be able to pre-make my meals and wanted soemthing portion controlled and convenient. Note that this time, I went on ebay to get a coupon and Buddy Bucks (saved myself $80 on the original order), and chose my own meals (I don't trust NS' claim that they send the most "popular" dishes, b/c they taste awful.) I was lucky that I didn't get any substitutes, but the "Free Week" that was sent to me was all the dishes that I didnt' like in the first place.

So far so good. It ain't great, but barely decent. We'll see what happens in one month.

Slimey Food (Reply to this comment)
by asylum23
I totally agree about the slimeyness of some food. The Mushroom Risotto is the worst! It's like a ball of coagulated, wet, slimey rice. I have found the breakfasts to be good, but the lunches and dinners leave a lot to be desired!

Hi! I meant to post it once, obviously... but the site kept going to a "Cannot Find Page" page, so I know i hit Retry.

Unfortunately, in deleting the other posts, I lost the comments, and now my post is marked "Not Helpful" Oh no!
