Protein Power will make you lose weight. I followed it for months and lost weight. 8 months to be exact.
What is Protein Power? Why does it work? Why did I quit? Those answers are why you are here, so read on...
What Protein Power is
Protein Power is a plan that essentially reduces your carb intake, while maintaining your protein and fat intakes.
Wait... this makes you lose weight?
Yes. Very simply put, carbs make you release insulin which helps you store fat. If you cut carbs you reduce insulin amounts, forcing your body to release fat to make up for it. Not to mention that when you reduce insulin you reduce cravings for carbs as well. If you want the medical version, check out the webpage's FAQ section. I'm not a doctor, I don't even play one on t.v.
When you are following the plan, your cravings are reduced or gone and you continue to lose weight as long as you stay on the plan, which isn't hard.
So thats how it works but does it work?
Again yes. The actual chemistry that the diet is founded on is tried and true. If you lower your carbs, you burn fat and lose weight.
The site boasts 2-3 pounds a week for women, 2-5 pounds a week for men. I, personally, lost 4 pounds a week at least (I lost over 50 total in the 8 weeks).
I will say, as soon as I stopped the plan and started eating carbs again, the weight came back.
Are there dangers?
That, I suppose, is between you and your doctor. Burning off fat the Protein Power way makes your body go into ketosis (keytones are the by-product of burning the fat). These come out through your breath, your urine, your sweat. But to be discarded through your urine they must go through your kidneys. The build up of keytones in your kidneys can cause kidney failure.
What Protein Power says about it is that if you are drinking enough water, the keytones won't build up. Doctors seem to be divided.
My doctor (and nurse practitioner) both were for the plan. They agreed that with enough water the keytones would simply pass through and not be an issue. They agreed that only when ketosis is occuring and they can't find the cause do they worry.
Why did I quit then??
I tend to live on stress. It's a daily fuel of my life. Always has been, always will be. I am more productive that way.
What does stress have to do with it?
Stress (in large amounts) will release insulin, which will decrease your fat burning *and* bring back your cravings for carbs... making staying on the diet more and more difficult (the same medical theory behind why emotional people eat).
I would find myself doing really well, then have a day of bus tours and non-stop people in my restaurant, get stressed out and start wanting bread or a dessert.
I just couldn't find a balance and without the stress I was less productive in my life. A lose lose situation... and I don't mean weight alone.
Why I still recommend it
While stress still runs my life, I do try to eat lower carb. I just have more energy that way. But I don't follow the plan by the book.
However, if you live a relatively stress-free life or even a life with normal stress levels, I think you'll be surprised and even happy with the results you get from this plan.
Once you get to your goal though, you'll need to find a balance. If you can do that I think you'll succeed.
