| cissa_dee's Full Review: Sugar Busters! |
I have edited this opinion for the sake of my readers, who had questions.
I was prescribed on this diet by an endocrinologist. It was originally thought that I have hypothyroidism, but after being on replacement therapy for a while and still showing 'normal' blood work, they (the Doctors) thought that it would be best if I tried this. Blood work has been done a million times over, but since I am on birth control pills blood work can come back with a false normal. I am on the birth control pills for a number of health reasons, so not taking them is not really an option. So following his directions, I went out and bought the books.
The book in my mind was laid out like a 'carbohydrate's addicts diet'. It went into detail about how the overproduction of insulin, caused by eating lots of starches, carbohydrates, and sugars, would make you fat, and therefore cause diabetes. The book also went on to discuss the types of foods that were allowed. On this diet, I was unable to eat corn and carrots. I was also unable to eat certain fruits. What I got out of this was that you just can't eat anything that has a possibility of tasting sweet, or breaking down into sugars.
I used this diet for about six months, nothing happened. The only things that it seemed that you could eat were hot spicy foods with no starch. I think that they might have had some logic in this one. What I figured was that eating spicy foods would speed up the metabolism.
The basic rule that I got out of the entire thing was 'don't eat anything white'. This includes pasta, some cheeses, bread, and the like.
I think I even gained some weight. It was probably the most agonizing six months of my life. And contrary to their claim, I did not feel better. I actually felt worse than I had ever felt before. I experienced bouts of severe lethargy, and just felt sick the entire time.
After watching the news on this subject, I found out something about it's creators. NONE of them are nutritionists. They are simply general practitioners, with no in depth knowledge of nutrition.
After having been on this and talking to my doctor again, they had no answer. No one has been able to figure it out. Until there is a way for me to stop taking birth control pills (without risk to my health), or they come up with another blood testing method, I'll probably never know why this didn't work, and why I have unexplained weight gain.
For anyone considering this diet, first talk to a professional, of course, and then try to figure out what is causing your weight gain. Diets are not fail safe!!! Everyone is different, and one diet versus another might not work. I would only recommend this diet to people who like creole food and the like.
