| naphtalia's Full Review: The Grapefruit Diet |
If you have grapefruit for brains, this might be a great diet for you. After all, you are what you eat and most of what you eat here is grapefruit - morning, noon and night.
Okay, before we go any further, here's the diet...
What you eat:
Breakfast:
half a grapefruit and plain coffee or Tea
Lunch:
half a grapefruit plus Two eggs, cucumber & tomato salad with (Vinegar, Lemon & Herbs) 1 piece of dry melba toast, and plain tea or coffee
Dinner:
half a grapefruit, 4-6 Ounces of Chicken or Beef or Ham or Lean Pork slices
half a head of lettuce + a tomato (Vinegar, Lemon & Herbs)
and plain tea or coffee
On the plus side, grapefruit is very healthy. It has vitamin C. It has fiber. It is low in sodium. It will fill you up. It definitely can be part of a healthy diet. Also on the plus side with this diet, it does provide at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies which the USDA recommends.
However, any diet that is so centered around a single food is not healthy. This diet also lacks calcium which is important for bones and teeth. This diet lacks iron which can lead to anemia. It lacks folic acid which helps prevent heart disease and prevents birth defects. It also lacks a host of other vitamins and minerals.
This is a starvation diet. It provides under 800 calories a day if you follow it. (Some web pages even go so far as to recommend taking appetite depressants if you're hungry on this diet.) If you starve your body, it will try to save calories by slowing down your metabolism. This will make it harder to lose weight in the future.
The best news about this diet is that most people can't stick to it for even two weeks. The monotony of the food will generally kill the willpower of most dieters before they can do too much damage to their bodies.
There are healthy diets out there. This isn't one. Besides, wouldn't you do better to change the habits that keep you overweight than to try one of these fad plans?
A healthy diet doesn't kill you...even if it does start with the word die.
