| ginger136's Full Review: The Grapefruit Diet |
I decided to try this diet after one of my bosses tried it and lost a great deal of weight (about 45 pounds). However, he had great motivation because his family had a history of heart disease. At age 45, he wanted to be as slender as possible.
For the average dieter, this is one tough diet to maintain. First, your total caffeine intake is supposed to drop to one cup of coffee per day. Soft drinks are OK, but they must be sugar-free with no caffeine. Carbohydrates are history. There's no bread, pasta, rice, etc. and no sugar.
The day starts off with 2 eggs and 2 strips of bacon. At each meal, you consume 1/2 of a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice. The lunch and evening meals consist of meats cooked however you like, vegetables, and salads. However, the vegetables you consume are supposed to be chiefly red and green. Since peas and corn are starches, they are prohibited.
You can eat all you wish from the allowed foods, but I still found myself getting hungry sometimes. Another disadvantage of this diet is you find yourself spending a lot of time preparing your meals. If you like to dine in restaurants, it's a bit difficult to find someplace where you can stick to the diet. Fast food restaurants are pretty much out unless you are selective.
As with any diet, before you begin, you should get the advice of your physician. It's especially important with this diet because you lose weight quickly. But, that's the problem. It's so restrictive that it's hard to stay on the diet.
