| kzandy's Full Review: The Zone Diet |
Well, if ANYONE doesn't know what the Zone diet is at this point, here's a quick synopsis:
1) You eat your meals in a 40-30-30 ratio of carbs to proteins to fats. Saturated fats and complex carbohydrates are frowned upon, but not forbidden, and emphasis is put on lifestyle changes and not the "diet" mentality.
2) It's supposed to decrease the risk of heart disease, make you less hungry and give you more energy, while losing weight and eating significantly fewer calories a day.
3) Jennifer Aniston is on it and now weighs a whopping 12 pounds.
But, ok, it's also supposed to be the only "fad" diet that you can stay on forever without health risks. I'm actually underweight, but I eat the worst foods, so I decided to try it as a healthy eating experiment.
And wow! Who would have thought that a 100 calorie snack could keep me full for 2 hours? I've only been on it for two days, but I can already feel the difference. Sure, calculating the ratios can be a pain, especially when you're really hungry, but those who don't want to bother can just grab a Zone bar or a Balance Bar.
The diet is VERY low cal - you're supposedly not supposed to eat below 1100 calories, but the book technically recommended about 800 for me at first. But, I found that if I ate the right foods, I wasn't hungry, so it worked fine.
Here's how it works - usually people eat high carb, low fat, low protein snacks. By adding fat, your body is triggered to STOP eating at the end of the snack. So, you don't munch on carbs forever. Then, the added protein makes the sugar from the carbs get distributed more evenly into your blood. So, your blood sugar doesn't spike and then leave you hungry. Instead, you feel satiated for several hours.
I'm not a medical expert, but I've done lots of research on nutrition, and I'm now encouraging my friends and family to try the Zone!!!
