I have been on Weight Watchers about a month, and so far I have lost about 6.5 pounds. That may not sound like much, but to me it is great since I was just trying not to gain any MORE weight. I got married six months ago and have gained thirty pounds since then. I have heard some good things about the program and so far so good. I am writing this review to not only help those who may be considering WW, but for myself because writing out how far I have come and where I have messed up helps me.
The program I use and am also reviewing, is the WW at home program. They send you everything you need and you don't have to bother with signing up for meetings or anything like that. You get a book of points values for general foods, dining out foods, an at-home guide, a journal, a slide type thing to tell you points values, and a subscription to WW magazine.
On WW, you keep track of what you eat by points system. This number is reached by a formula of your age, current weight, height, current activity level, and so on. My daily points target is 22. As I look through different points values for food I was blown away by the fact that some of the foods I was eating before were worth close to all of my daily points!
You can still eat what you want, just less of it. You will need to write down everything you eat and drink, which was easy for me at first but now I must admit I have been slipping in that area. If you mess up big time, write that down in your journal too, and it will be easier to get back on track next time. The only thing that drove me crazy about WW is all the counting and writing and having to measure everything out before eating it. I got over that pretty quick though because that is basically all there is to the diet.
A few things to keep in mind that have helped me so far:
*Avoid drinking your points! I have switched my daily Starbucks Caramel Macchiato with whip cream to a Sugar free Vanilla latte with foam and fat-free milk. This has saved me about 4 points a day plus I get to count the latte as one of my milk servings!!
*Make yourself eat a lot of salad and vegetables!!! With some fat free dressing and no cheese, it doesn't cost you any points and it fills you up.
*When I feel slightly hungry, I drink a bottle of water and this keeps me full for at least an hour. If I want something sweet I add some lemon juice and three packs of splenda to my water and that seems to satisfy my sweet tooth for a little while (enough to where I don't pig out on muffins and donuts and such!)
*It is important to measure out a "serving" beforehand. What Weight Watchers considers a serving of, say cereal, is about 2 or 3 times less than what I was eating before. A bowl of Fruit Loops filled to the rim of the bowl is not one serving! Closer to two or even three depending on the size of bowl I was using!!!
If you are interested in Weight Watchers at home all you need to do is go on weightwatchers.com and sign up. It costs about $99 for the standard program and $129 for the deluxe. The only difference is the deluxe has a cookbook, a workout guide, and a points calculator. The standard kit has everything you need to effectively follow the program.
I do recommend WW to those looking to lose weight. It has not only helped me get a few pounds lighter, but it has made more conscious of my habits, made me think about what I was eating, and helped me make better decisions. I still has a few splurges here and there, but for the most part I now eat to fulfill my body's nutrition and energy needs, not my mind's emotional needs. I have found that a few treats every now and then are ok, because I am no longer needlessly snacking on high-fat, high-sugar foods.
