caradoc's Full Review: Honeywell Enviracaire 17400 Air Purifier
Ok, so the dust isn't "gone," but it's certainly a lot less than it was.
I'm asthmatic, and I have a lot of computer equipment that needs to remain as dust-free as I can keep it. I also have two dogs, and I live in the dust capital of the Southwestern United States - Scottsdale, Arizona.
If it's not dust, then it's olive, orange, and carob pollen. Or honeysuckle. Or anything else that's been imported into the Valley over the years, as it seems I'm not allergic to *any* of the *native* plants...
I found the Honeywell air cleaner at CostCo for about half of what I've seen listed elsewhere. I wanted a high-volume cleaner, to keep my office space at the house cleaner than it was. I have to change the prefilter on the cleaner about twice as often as the instructions claim, but I knew I'd probably have to do it - two dogs can drag a *lot* of dust, pollen, and hair into a house.
In "medium" mode, the air cleaner seems to cycle through pretty much all of the air in my office every hour or so. At least, when we've cooked fish or onions, the scent is gone from my office that fast - it may be longer for the rest of the house.
I've noticed that I *do* breathe easier in my office space than in, say, the living room, and I attribute this to the fact that I leave the Honeywell HEPA filter running at all times. Whenever the little indicator light comes on to tell me to change a filter, I do. Other than that, it doesn't take any real maintenance to keep running.
The air filter does *not* generate any static electricity, or generate ions to precipitate dust. So things still gather a little dust, but nowhere near as much as they used to.
I'll be buying two more of these - one for the living room, and one for the bedroom. The one that I've had for the last year has been well worth it.
