lonelywind's Full Review: Braun Syncro 7526 Electric Shaver
In June, a few years ago (not certain which), I was watching TV, when I saw a commercial for the Braun Syncro 7526 electric shaver. Now I'll admit, I was very interested. What I didn't know was, my wife was watching me. Looking for clues for the perfect Father's Day present. I can remember her asking me what I thought about it. I told her, "Yeah, it would be nice, but it costs $150, and there's no way I would ever pay that for a razor!" As it turned out, I didn't have to.
Backtracking for just a moment: My experience prior to then with electric shavers was not a pleasant one. I can remember my father using a Norelco electric shaver (well, more than one over the years) from the time I was a young boy. In fact, my parents bought me one when I was in high school. I used it every so often, but then, I didn't have much of a beard then. About the time I was 19 or 20, I started having more facial hair, and began to scrutinize what I shaved with, having to now shave every day.
With young skin, comfort is not so much of an issue, so that didn't bother me. However, time was important then, and so was neatness. I found that the Norelco took forever to shave, and didn't do a complete job. As young people tend to do, I experimented with other things, and found that I liked blade shaving better. Every so many years, I would try to "go electric" again -- other Norelcos (including one two-head model), and even a Remington that was supposed to "shave as close as a blade," or so Victor Kiam said. No such luck.
About a year prior to my Father's Day gift, I was out of town and realized that I did not pack a razor. Not wanting to spend a lot of money, I saw a battery-powered Braun in Wal-Mart. Having read positive comments about Braun in Consumer Reports magazine, I decided to try it. And I liked it fairly well. I soon found out the foibles of owning a cheap shaver, but the operation was good, and I liked the way it felt. So, when I saw the commercial for the new Braun shaver, it caught my attention.
You can imagine how I felt when I came home from work that Father's Day, and opened the package my wife had in front of me, expectant look in her eyes. As soon as I got the first bit of paper off, I could see what it was. My first reaction shows my "cheap" side - I couldn't believe she spent that much money on me for Father's Day! But, she explained, she could see the look on my eyes while watching the commercial, and it was something I could use for a long time. And I was a very happy camper.
Being a blade shaver at the time, it took me a couple of weeks to get used to shaving with the Braun. What I did find out was, it gave me the best shave of any electric that I have ever owned! In fact, it still does, two or three years and a new cutter and foil later. As they say, "the proof is in the pudding." My wife loves to run her hands along my face right after I shave, to feel the smooth skin.
One of the things I used to hate about shaving with an electric shaver was cleaning the things, and with the Braun Syncro 7526, you don't have to. The 7526 includes a "Clean&Charge" stand for automatic cleaning, drying and charging. When finished shaving, you place the shaver in the stand, press down the handle, and the process begins. A cleaning solution is ran through the head while the motor cycles on and off, for a few minutes. Then, a fan circulates air through the head to dry it. If the battery is low, the shaver can be charged by pressing a button in the stand (I think today's model does this automatically as needed).
The shaver, primarily black with metal accents, has a 4-way moving head, which is supposed to increase the chances for stubble to enter the holes in the foil. Judging from the quickness and results of the shave, I'd say it works. On the metal pieces and on the back side, there are embedded small raised black dots, to allow for a more controlled grip. It is a very attractive shaver.
The power switch has a push-button release, and can lock in any of the following settings (indicated by numbers on the power switch:
0) Off.
1) Normal shave, with pivoting head. The head pivots pretty far in both directions, allowing the foil to contact the skin at all times.
2) Fixed head, for shaving problem areas. The head does not pivot, allowing you to get just the right angle for the chin, under the nose, etc.
3) Pop-up trimmer, for trimming sideburns. The trimmer extends far out the front of the top of the foil. It is a nice wide (about an inch) trimmer.
There is a green LED, which is a charging indicator, and a red one for low charge. A flashing yellow LED at the base indicates the charge level (by the frequency in which it flashes while on the charging stand).
While this is a cordless, rechargeable shaver, it can also be used with the cord. The same cord can be used either with the charging stand or the shaver. Battery (nickel-hydride type) recharge time is 60 minutes (3 minute quick charge for one shave). A charge provides up to 50 minutes (2-3 weeks) of cordless shaving.
A deluxe travel pouch, including a cleaning brush and a snap-on foil cover, is included with the shaver, along with the cleaning solution. The cleaning solution is contained in a plastic cartridge, which is designed to be thrown away when it is depleted (a light on the charging stand indicates when it is within a week of needing to be replaced). The cutter and foil should be replaced every 18 months, and easy to replace without tools. The cleaning solution, along with replacement foil and cutter, are available in most retail outlets.
