I have to admit that I really hate shaving. If I can get away with it I will go for a week without shaving my legs or underarms. Now some of you may say that is disgusting. I used to think it was, but then I married a man who finds underarm hair sexy and just to make him happy I grew mine in over one winter. To my surprise the hair was quite soft and not very thick. Despite my husband’s enjoyment of armpit hair, I like to generally keep the pits smooth. Too bad he doesn’t enjoy leg hair as much as "pit" hair. Go figure!
I bought the Emjoi Gently Gold Caress because the Emjoi company claimed this product was pain free and would not nick or cut me. They claimed the product would prevent my getting those itchy red bumps which sometimes pop up after a close shave (I understand they are ingrown hairs). Since this product yanks the hairs out by the roots, I really doubt that it can prevent getting ingrown hairs, which are caused by the hair being unable to break out of the surface of the skin.
They also claimed it produced longer lasting results and was not painful, especially compared to waxing. Ha! Not true! This product hurt like a son of a gun!
Here is how it works. It looks a lot like an electric razor. You plug it in, run it slowly over the area needing hair removal, and these little gold things at the business end of the epilator grab the hairs and yank them out. OOOOH! PAIN! I stopped after a few strokes.
Now, in fairness, I have never waxed my body (only my face), so I can't really make a comparison between the Emjoi hair remover and waxing, but I could not believe how much pain this product caused. If this is less painful than using wax to remove body hair, then I think all those people who wax every 2-3 weeks are completely insane!
I should mention that I am a great big wimp when it comes to tolerating pain. You probably figured that out already. By the way, I find lip waxing unbearable, although chin waxing is fine. I also have used electrolysis on my chin, which is ridiculously painful, but bearable to me because eventually the hairs will stop growing back, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I bought it on special from QVC.com for 60 dollars and returned it the day after I got it. They have a little box on the return form asking why I am returning their fine merchandise. I wrote one word: OUCH!
I also did not find that this epilator removed any more hair than my electric razor. In fact I think the electric razor may remove more hair than Emjoi, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and call it a tie.
So, if you are a wimp like me, I advise you to stay away from this product. Until someone comes up with a painless, longer lasting method of hair removal, I think I'll stick to my good old-fashioned razor and shaving cream.
