| kornell_911's Full Review: Philips Norelco 20XL Clipper Hair Trimmer |
One of the main reasons why I opted for the 20XL over a competing brand (a Wahl model), is that the Norelco brand (and their line of products) is renowned for excellence. In retrospect, I made one of my worst buying decisions with this piece of junk.
Specs (for a full listing check out: www.norelco.com/specs/Specs.cgi?Model=20XL# )
-Hair Length Selector.
Choose among 7 different hair length settings (21, 18,15,13,10,7, 4 mm/.84,.72,.6,.52,.4,.28,.16 in.)
-High Speed Motor.
Minimizes vibration and noise, ensures extended use without overheating.
-Precision Chromium Steel Cutting Blades
3-D teeth glide through hair smoothly
-Cutting Blades.
Jut out and swing away for easy cleaning.
-Ergonomically designed.
Fits comfortably in your hand. This is just a gimmick to get you to buy this sleek-looking device. Any regular cutting device would work equally well.
-Cordless. There is a built in charger (12 hours). The cutter does come with a power cord. I suggest using the power cord because the battery wears fast and does not really cut well.
-Comes equipped with a slick comb, small brush, and scissors.
the Bad
--Dull blades and weak motor. The so-called chromium steel cutting blades are not sharp as compared to other cutting devices.
Some of my hair was ripped off my pink scalp because of the 20XL’s weak motor and/or non-sharp blades. I’m still wincing pain.
--This Norelco lacks power and the battery works horribly. Don’t even try using this thing without the power cord.
--The 20XL is not at all a home cutting system. There is a selector adjustor that serves the place of removable clips. Without the clips, it is extremely difficult to cut the correct amount of hair. The settings are not accurate at all.
A professional barber's hair cutting device shames this plastic piece.
--Plastic, light, fragile.
If you drop this thing, I’m sure it will crack and cease to function.
the Good
--Cheap. Only costs some 20 bucks.
--Easy to clean. The plastic blades come out easily.
--Easy to use.
--Cordless and lightweight.
--Norelco does offer a 60 day money back guarantee on the 20XL. So, you may want to try it out for yourself, just to see how bad the thing is.
--Most likely cuts thin and thinning hair with no problem.
the LowDown
The 20XL is a cheap piece of metal and plastic that should not even be considered when purchasing a home cutting set.
I purchased the item to trim my sideburns as well as trim some of my cowlick, but the thing simply wouldn't cut properly.
I suggest opting for a more professional hair cutting set -- one with sharper blades and a stronger motor.
Where to Buy?
The 20XL can be purchased on-line or off-line for a mere $20. Norelco may charge tax and shipping/handling charges on-line. So, it may be wiser to purchase off-line.
