| wideiris's Full Review: Philips Advantage 5615 X Electric Shaver |
I’ve been a gillette disposable razor guy for over 10 years now, having once owned an electric remington when I was 17, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this but - this razor shaves as close as a blade and is simple and smooth. My love of the straight blade is due to my first experiences with the electric remington, which was awful and at times hurt to use, plus the shave wasn’t close, so I took up the gillette disposables and never looked back… until now. I was experiencing a type of ‘razor fatigue’, my face wasn’t responding well to the blade. I have the most sensitive skin, so much so that I’ve been to three dermatologists to help me with various moisturizers and such. So the thought of an electric never crossed my mind until this ‘fatigue’ started taking place. I needed a solution, and I found mine on Ebay for $34US, a steal, so I leaped in.
First off, as everyone here has said, it takes a little time to adjust. Yes, the first one wasn’t great, and left me a little raw, but after 6 shaves, it’s been perfect. And I mean perfect. So smooth you’ll marvel at the technology. And you can’t feel it cutting, for those of you who once used the old style razors and would sometimes feel the ‘nick’ of a pulled hair.
But what I love about this razor is that it’s wet/dry, so you can use it around water, get it wet, no sweat. I used the nivea replacements up, but I find them to be too expensive and they can be a little annoying to have to have around all the time. I use straight up Edge Gel, and put it on just like a normal shave. It’s amazing, honestly, if I were norelco, I’d be offerring your money back too if you didn’t like it, because you’re going to love it. I usually shave DRY, and I love it. Make sure your skin is dry as well, or you’ll feel the ‘nicks’ a little bit. Only use shaving cream if you’re shaving wet, and it makes it very smooth.
Obviously it’s rechargeable, and comes with a little recharger stand and a neoprene storage case and a sideburn trimmer (the only annoyance with this electric is trying to get your sideburns straight). That’s the standard gear for these types of electronics. A small light on the unit itself tells you when the battery is getting low, so you don’t have to worry about running out of juice halfway through. It lasts me about 8 shaves before it needs a recharge.
It cleans up in a snap, just running hot water through the head, which you flip up, and you’re done. I’d say it takes about the same amount of time as a razor but there are a few distinct advantages: 1 - no water all over the place in the bathroom 2 - no cuts and scratches EVER, to ruin that perfect date, or first day on the job 3 - environmentally, this is a much wiser choice, as you’ll use less shaving cream (therefore less cans) and no throwing the plastic and metal into the trash constantly. That’s a real plus. Imagine if every man on the planet switched to electric how much would be saved from the landfill.
That’s obviously not why I bought it, but I am overjoyed that I did. A little secret pleasure for all you gadget guys out there is that every time you use it you feel like you’re playing with a toy. It’s got sounds, lights, a working motor, and it’s useful. So for even sensitive skin like mine, for the environment, and for yourself, buy this razor, it will surprise you with its extreme comfort, ease of use, and super-silky-smooth shave.
