| rwetsel's Full Review: Philips Advantage 5615 X Electric Shaver |
After doing considerable research on electrics, I recently parted with the hundred bucks necessary to acquire myself a Norelco Advantage 5615x. When deciding on a new razor, I had a few criteria: First of all, I have fairly sensitive skin on my face so I needed something that wouldn't irritate. I also wanted something I could use wet or dry, in the shower or the car (I guess that requires it also be portable, I'd hate to meet a razor that wasn't :) The Advantage razor seemed to fit all of my criteria, and no matter where I checked, I couldn't find much bad written about it.
I got mine at BJ's Wholesale Club for 89.99 (a steal considering I've seen the same model for $129.99). I was happy to have gotten such a good deal, and excited to take it for a spin. The razor fits perfectly in your hand, and even though it's grip is entirely plastic, it has a great feel and weight to it. I was really surprised how sturdy and well built it feels and looks. After charging it for the first time (a recommended 8 full hours in a charger that doubles neatly as a stand), I was ready. The Nivea lotion cartridges are pretty ingenious, they install easily and the dispenser mechanism is simple enough that not much can break or wear out over the long term (huge plus). Small buttons on either side of the razor dispense the lotion - and it's easy to control how much or how little, or even add a dose mid-shave. Wow does this lotion make a difference; it's light and smells good. The razor's 3 lift and cut heads glide across your face extremely smoothly. I've tried using my advantage without the lotion and even though I still get a great shave, I can't say it's near as enjoyable an experience!! Once you're done shaving, you just flip open the top (exposing the blades) and run it under hot water for a few seconds, then drop it back in it's charging stand - effortless.
Over the next few months, I used my Advantage in the shower, at the sink, in the car, even at the office. The advantage is a perfect "road" razor because the Nivea doubles as an aftershave, leaving your face feeling smooth and cool, not dry and irritated. A convenient travel pouch makes carrying it around no problem - and the plastic cap that covers the blades in transit even has small pieces that stick out over the lotion dispenser buttons so they aren't accidentally pressed. Unfortunately, small amounts (very small) of the Nivea still leak out under the cap sometimes and that gets a bit annoying. I've had my Advantage for 6 months now and it hasn't lost any life in the batteries or needed any replacements, to tell the truth, despite all my abuse it still looks and acts new!
The only flaw (and it's minor believe me) to the Advantage that I've found so far is that replacing the Nivea cartridges is something you have to remember! Keep them stocked because you'll miss it when you run out and can't get to the store for a few days :) Luckily, the Nivea is available all over the place, at Wal-Mart, Kmart, the grocery store and most drug stores i've tried. Norelco even has an "automatic replacement plan" that allows you to sign up for steady re-supplies by mail every few months (using auto credit card debits).
All in all I'm extremely satisfied with my Norelco Advantage. I'd recommend it to just about anyone who shaves! I forgot to mention one thing too, the Advantage comes with a click on trimmer that makes edging sideburns a cinch!
