2006 Update: Panasonic Linear 8067 Wet/Dry Shaver is Better Than a Blade

Written: Jun 15 '01 (Updated Mar 17 '06)
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
  • Ease of Use:
  • Battery Life:
  • Effectiveness:
Pros:Comfort, shaves close enough, design makes for easy cleaning and maintenance
Cons:Norelco Advantage shaves closer, as does a good, new blade
The Bottom Line: Worth getting, as it shaves close enough for business and it's EXTREMELY comfortable.

Update: March 2006

Late last year, I needed to replace the blades and couldn't find them anywhere in the US. So, I relectantly retired this very solid unit and replaced it with the Norelco Cool skin 7775x Wet Electric Razor. This unit (Panasonic) is still worth buying if you find it in new or like new condition, but it will be hard to find replacement parts. The initial review is below the asterisks.

I bought the Panasonic Linear 8067 Wet/Dry shaver about a month ago on Ebay for $100 total, including shipping. I've gotten through the one month adjustment period on the razor, and am pleased with it. The shave itself is close and comfortable when I do so in the shower, I wash my face thoroughly, use shaving cream and then shave.

I had previously used blades and a Norelco Advantage.

The advantages of the Panasonic unit are:

Reasonably Close Shave For purposes of my day job, it's a good-looking shave.

Comfort I generally make 2 passes of the entire face, with a little touch-up, and that delivers a close shave with no irritation, a BIG improvement over blades, which can be very irritating, even when new.

cleaning and maintenance are easy That's inherent in the foil design - few moving parts so that it's easily accessed for cleaning and maintenance.

Fast, powerful charge The shaver charges quickly. The base is easier to use, and the shaver maintains it's charge well. After a while, the Advantage seemed to be slightly less powerful, even after a full charge.

These advantages are a clear improvement over dry electric shaving (more irritation, not as close) and blades (expense, irritating shaves and no closer after the first use of a new blade).

The disadvantages are:

Not a perfect shave There are some straggler hairs on the lower part of the neck that are difficult. This is not a big deal for me because it does not show at the office. The first few shaves on a new blade are closer. I also recall that the Norelco Advantage dealt with the stragglers. However, the Advantage was a big-time pain to maintain and clean, beacuse of more parts and more moving parts.

I'm glad I got it. For $100, I'm getting a shave that's close enough for the office and more comfortable than a blade. I'll give this 4*s, just because the perfect electric razor would have the closeness of a rotary shaver plus the ease of maintenance of a foil shaver.
