Wilson Staff D-100 Irons Review--Hot List Gold Medal Contenders

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Great Distance, Excellent Balance, Extreme Forgiveness, Good Looks

Cons:Despite Wilson Staff's Recent Track Record,They Are Still Not The Cool Clubs To Own.

The Bottom Line: These are, in my humble opinion, the best Super Game Improvement Irons to hit the market this year. You need to at least try them before buying anything else.

As one who played Wilson Staff Di 9's as well as the Ci9's for several seasons, I was intrigued by the promise of the new Wilson Staff Di 100's. Would they be as long as the Di 9's which could knock hell out of a rock and still launch it 185 yards? Would the newer skinnier shaft be as forgiving as the most forgiving shaft of all--The Fat Shaft--or would Wilson rue the day it gave up on one of the more obvious features that separated their clubs from all the other makers? Would the clubs be as workable as the Ci9's and/or the even more workable Ci11's? Would the decision to go with Matrix Ozik Graphite Shafts prove as richly rewarding in performance, as it was as eye candy to match the new thinner and less cumbersome looking heads? Would I still be able to hit a set, and walk away recommending them with no qualms, and the ability to sleep at night for doing so? The answer to all of these questions, and many others, is a most resounding  ..."YES!" you need to read on to see why, and find out about some of the most under rated irons currently in the game of golf.

Distance--5 Stars

Wilson Staff does it again. The 4,5, and 6 Irons are very long, and very forgiving. I like the fact that Wilson took the time to work out the conundrum that had painted them into a corner on earlier models. The lofts remain strong, but not as ludicrous as they were with the 42.5* Pitching Wedge in the Di9 Set. That of course forced them to include both an Attack and a Gap Wedge in the set, in addition to the Pitching Wedge, and though I rather liked my set, it did present a certain sort of redundancy to one's Wedge Scoring System. These clubs, with the off the rack Matrix Studio 6.1 Graphite shaft are just as long as my Adams Redline irons which have been retro-fitted with custom cut Aldila VS Proto By You shafts. They also feel good, in the balance department, and allow you to attack the pin from long distance. If you have the swing, these are very accurate Super Game Improvement Clubs, and actually straddle the category of Super Game Improvement/Game Improvement Clubs by offering up the distance of Super Game Improvement, with the workability of some of the better Game Improvement clubs.

Forgiveness and Mid Distance Pin Seeking--5 Stars

I have only experienced clubs this forgiving at one time in my life, and that was when I played the Wilson Staff Di9's. The 7,8, and 9 Irons in this set are wonderful mid distance /transition clubs. and on this I promise you. The 7 Iron, even when I have the brothers Arthur Itis and Burr S. Itis kicking in is an easy 150 club. The youngsters and mid-cappers amongst you will easily make this a 165 club. My swing coach cold-cocked the 6 for 235 and the 7 for 215, but that is a professional grade swing, and taken at an all-out "SWAT" in order to--"...see what these things can do." (He plays Mizuno Blades, but loves these for LONG and STRAIGHT show off shots under any conditions. The ball flight is high, but not stratospheric, and there is usually a goodly amount of roll out. You can use a Urethane Covered Ball and get the Pitching Wedge to plop drop and stop from 125 yards out. That's usually me when my 7 iron swing speed is clocking in at 85.
As with most all of Wilson Staff Irons--these forgive the dreaded toe hit better than most other makers clubs, and as amateurs that is the usual miscue off the sweet spot for us.

Short Game Stuff-4 1/2 Stars

I'm a little pickier here. I love the Pitching Wedge in this set, even if it is a ridiculously strong 43*. In my bag, however, I already have a Gap Wedge which is a forged club bent to my specs. I'm not saying this Gap Wedge isn't up to snuff now--because it is! It's just that my particular game has a matching set of Forged Wedges that are specifically bent to my specs. Compared to everybody else's off the rack set Gap Wedge this thing is pretty awesome. It's darned forgiving, fairly accurate, and even kind of spinny. Yes with an old Bridgestone B330-S ball--the old 3-piece model-aka-the spinniest ball known to mankind, I could get the Gap Wedge to back the ball up. The Pitching Wedge, as with the other irons is easily the equal of the Redline Pitching Wedge I currently bag. Keep in mind, my Redlines are sporting Aldila Shafts which retailed for $40 apiece, and were then custom cut and fitted to my specs. For an off the rack club to match that type of performance is pretty amazing.

Specs and Techs—4 ½ Stars
  I’d love to give these super long and easy to hit irons the five stars they deserve. I am definitely going to be upset with a certain golf magazine’s “Hot List” if these don’t score gold, because they beat the absolute tar out of almost all the new Super Game Improvement Clubs coming out this year. Plus—unlike a lot of other maker’s models—you can grow with these all the way through well-established mid-capper.  Heck it wouldn’t even surprise me if these made it into the bag of a few single digit players who just don’t have the range time they used to. I know plenty of those who are currently sporting the Adams Redlines I play now, and would rather buy a new set of clubs than re-shaft there old ones. The only reason I didn’t is because the lofts are still mighty strong.
4I=21.5*
5I=24*
6I=27*
7I=31*
8I=35*
9I=39*
PW=43*
GW=47*
Those are some mighty strong lofts alright, but the Matrix Studio 6.1 (61 Grams) Graphite Shaft—actually my first pick over the True Temper 85 Gram Steel Shaft really helps smooth out what could be a rather rough launch if Wilson did not match the shafts so well. It is a mid-torque shaft, with a low- mid kick point, and a medium to high launch.

Overall—5 Stars
Wilson Staff continues to build some of the most under-rated equipment in the business. Had I not run across such a good deal on my shafts, and the price of the re-shafting, I would probably have retired my Adams Redlines and gone for these. They would have made the third set of Wilson Staff Irons I have owned in the past several years. That speaks highly of them, as I am more a person going through swing changes than simply a club junkie. I can recommend these clubs to anyone who is looking for a high performance Super Game Improvement-Game Improvement Iron. These are exceptionally long, massively forgiving, and reasonably priced. Personally speaking, I think they are a rather good looking set of clubs as well. If you are in the market—you need to check these babies out.
