Enough Eek To Make You Freak: Wilton 3-D Rat Mold
Written: Aug 1, 2012

Pros:Great size, textured detail, for chocolate or gelatin.
Cons:Seasonal item, hollow pieces may crack.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a nice looking rat, well, this one is a great pick.
Wilton has a lot of Halloween items to pick from, they have some excellent candy molds and then there are some that are larger in size that can be used for other things. The rat is a nice looking piece that makes a hell of a nice looking end piece but because of the size of it you can use it to make a gelatin mold too. The mold is made of plastic and there is flex to it but it is solid enough that it can be used to make gelatin as long as the mix isn't super hot. If you are going to make a gelatin rat with this, do not use the full amount of water. You are going to want to reduce the amount of water by one half cup [for a two cup mix]. This will help create something that is more solid and has a nicer look to it. For making chocolate rats, this is a great size but it does require more time to set up and harden. You can do this in one solid color or use different contrasting colors to make a more realistic looking rat. This is not a two piece mold, there are other companies that make a two piece mold that results in a hollow shape but you have to press the two pieces together to get it to form the shape. That can result in a ridge or seam on the rat that you will either have to live with or try to trim. I'd rather take the extra time needed to make a solid rat with this mold than to risk wasting time with something that needs 'assembled'. Wilton 3-D Rat Candy Mold Product Number: 2115-2163 Suggested Price: $1.99 The listing for this is incorrect; the Wilton product number is 2115-2163, not the 2115-1357 listed. There is a 2115-1357 but it is for a completely different product. The mold is only going to make one piece so if you want to make more than a couple of these you are going to want to work fast. You can make it solid or do one that is hollow. To make a hollow rat you are going to pour in about three ounces of melted chocolate and rotate it on the inside of the mold. Once you get everything coated you need to keep rotating it. The chocolate will start to set up and you can do as many passes as you want with it. For a filed rat you are going to want to pour in the chocolate and rotate the mold to get even coverage. Check for air bubbles and break them up with a toothpick. If you are going to add detail to it, you need to do this before you make the fill. Some of the cool things that you can do with this mold is to use different colors of chocolate; gray, white, black or basic milk chocolate will work but if you take a little bit of time to add some detail to it you are going to end up with something that looks great. This is not a small rat, the end result piece is going to be almost eight inches long and a little less than an inch and a half high. It is going to be too large to use on a cake unless you are making something huge. One of the coolest things you can do with the mold is to paint in lighter colors on the textured detail of the fur. The entire body of the rat has detailing to it so it has a nice look to it, well, for being a rat that is. You can do the eyes and ears in a different color if you want but even if you are sticking with something that is one color you are going to get a great looking rat. The nose is a little hard to see if you don't paint it another color but if you are doing a fill with a darker chocolate you are going to want to do at least three or four passes with lighter colors for the textured areas. You do not have to make a completely solid rat but if you try to make a hollow one and don't have enough chocolate inside the mold you are going to end up with it cracking when you take it out of the mold. For a solid fill you need to let this sit for at least two hours to completely harden the whole way through. ^V^ © Freak369 - 2012 ^V^ 2104-1033 Wilton Halloween Candy Making Kit 2115-1547 Wilton Tombstone Candy Mold 2115-1415 Wilton Creepy Tombstones Mold 2115-1752 Wilton Scary Monsters Candy Mold 2115-1407 http://content_523003727492 2115-1421 Wilton 3-D Skull Candy Mold
