Wimbledon -- A date movie, starring Kirsten Dunst

Jan 11, 2005 (Updated Jan 11, 2005)
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Kirsten Dunst, cuteness

Cons:too predictable, VERY short on good dialogue, razor-thin plot

The Bottom Line: Wimbledon is a good film for Kirsten Dunst fans, and we will just leave it at that.

It’s common practice for movies to be made with a specific audience in mind. We have the musicals, the action films, the comedies, and we even have "date movies." Wimbledon is exactly that, and succeeds at being what it is supposed to be, a short film about a relationship that young couples would enjoy. If you don't fall into that category, then I have a hard time believing that you would like this film.

Wimbledon stars Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany as two tennis stars who meet up, and strike a fancy for each other at the annual Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. She is at the top of her game, #1 on the female tennis tour, and brings to mind flashes of McEnroe with her on-court antics. He is on his last legs as a player, and is the type of player that parents tell their children to model themselves after. They seem like an unlikely pair, but when did differences like that ever stop two people from falling in love? The story follows their ups and downs, and tries hard to make us believe that this older male tennis player, and this very young female tennis player would actually go for each other. Of course in between we have an over-protective father, a supportive friend, and an arch-rival for Bettany in the tournament.

Dunst is her quirky self as usual, and if you are a big fan of her, then this movie will not disappoint you. The dialogue she is given is not overly brilliant, but she is not dumbed down for an audience either. However, this is a role that I have seen her play before, and her character really seemed like Mary Jane from Spiderman all over again. The best thing going for her is that she tries hard in her roles, and that she does come of with a cuteness that makes her endearing, but not annoying. Bettany has been in many better roles that the one he takes on here, the best of which was Master and Commander. Here he plays the 119th ranked man in tennis, and gets into Wimbledon with a wild-card draw. Coming across Dunst's character is what helps him turn everything around, and gives him the ability to recapture some of his past prowess in the game. Being 34 though, and with Dunst at 22 years of age, the age disparity is sometimes distracting in the film.

Wimbledon will definitely not win any awards for its script or the plot, and it isn't going to make any best films lists. That being said, I thought that the movie was cute, and would recommend it as a date movie, but that it has no real redeeming qualities after that. There are several good tennis-playing sequences that keep the sports fan in me happy, and the central love story is something that you can actually hang your hat on. But, in the end I found the film to be entirely too predictable, and I was hoping in the end that more surprises had existed. When I see a movie, I get distracted when I start to think "X,Y, and Z are going to happen next." This is fully that type of film, and I find myself hard-pressed to give it anything higher than 2 stars. On the flip side of that message though, the movie was cute, and I do think that it is a good movie if you fall into the demographics that I clarified earlier.

*Final Recommendation : watchable if you are looking for a date movie, where you care more about spending time with someone else, than in watching the movie intently.
