In the middle of mowing our lawn our old lawn mower broke. Although we have a small lawn we have two levels so I usually do the lower part rather than the whole lawn because at about 70 pounds – give or take a few pounds- it is too heavy for me to lift. We needed something lightweight since it has to be lifted up five steps. We immediately went to Home Depot and chose the Yard Machines 11A-B04E000 21-Inch 158cc Briggs & Stratton 500 Series Mulch/Side Discharge Gas Powered Mower.

About the Yard Machines 21- Inch Mower:
The cost is about $200.00, which is a good price for a low-end lawn mower. I would put this Push Mower in that category.
There is a 2-year limited warranty.
It measures (This is approximate.) 34-inches deep by 19-inches high by 24- inches wide. The cutting width is 21 inches, which is why there is a 21 in the name!
It has a 158cc Briggs & Stratton engine. What this means is that it has a 6 1/5 horsepower engine. As a comparison a large riding mower with a 42-cutting width will have more than twice that amount (at least 14 horsepower).
At 7 ½ inches, the wheels are considered large and that helps us move it over our somewhat difficult- to- mow yard. As I said our yard is in two layers and it is also not flat. We live on a bluff causing the yard to be hilly – not visibly hilly - but it feels that way when I mow.
This is a self-propelled mower with a front drive. Front drive mowers sort of push the mower along, which works fine for us. Although we do have tight spots where rear wheels turn automatically and that would be helpful, I like the way this handles.
It has a 0.9 quart fuel capacity and is made in the United States.
We have had the Yard Machines 21-inch mower for several years and it is still going strong. Our lawn gets mowed regularly unless we are away. When we come back after a 3-week vacation and our grass is high, the mower does a great job.
In spite of having a front-wheel drive Yard Machines 21-inch 500 Series Mower's design allows us to get closer to edges than our old machine did.
It allows for mulching and has a rear bagger. The rear bagger is great - it's much easier than our old side bag and does a great job of catching the cut grass. Since there is no side bag we can get around bushes easily.
Yard Machines Mower has 9 height adjustments so for us it's great to be able to pick the height we want and need, which is terrific especially since we are away a lot and are not necessarily mowing the lawn weekly.
Yard Machines Lawn Mower is easy to start just by pulling out the choke and pulling out the cord.
A Couple of Complaints:
This machine is not energy compliant so it is not sold in California.
The connection to the spark plug has come loose a couple of times. This means it won't start. The first time it happened we were ready to return it but looked up the troubleshooting in the manual and we were told to make sure the spark plug was in tightly. That works!
Jo’s Final Thoughts:
Yard Machines 21 inch 158cc Mulch/Side Discharge Mower is a good, low-end lawn mower for small yards. The warranty is good so for the price I am glad we gave it a try.
