Clear Bath Mat

Written: Apr 07 '13
Pros:Sticks well, easy to clean, clear so it shows when it needs cleaning
Cons:I'd like it to be 6-8 inches longer
The Bottom Line: A nice bath mat that isn't too expensive.

When we moved into our new home last May I purchased a bath tub mat that was extremely soft and comfortable.  It was made of a softer material that looks similar to an anti-slip mat made for rugs or shelves.

I loved this mat, but my kitten did too, and unfortunately she would hop in the tub and rip at it with her claws.  Each time I took a bath I had small pieces of the rubber floating around in my water.  It was time for a new bath mat.

This mat, made by Zenith, can be found at Home Depot stores, and it retails for about ten dollars.  I've always had bath mats that were white or beige, but there are benefits to using a clear mat such as this one.

It measures 27 1/2" ling and 15 3/4" wide.  Since the mat comes all rolled up, it's hard to tell exactly how large it is.  While this does fit into our standard sized bathtub, it is a bit smaller than I would prefer, mainly in the length.  I'd like it to be a good 6-8 inches longer.

The bottom of the mat is covered with suction cups, and these form a bubble on the opposite side - thus the name "Bubble Mat".  It stays in place well and is easy to pull up when it's time to give it a scrub.  The fact that it is clear means I am cleaning it more often, which is a good thing.  I have been so grossed out by the mildew that was on the bottom of my bath mats that I have actually thrown them away and bought new ones.  The thought of cleaning them was too much!  Since this one is clear I can see when it needs to be cleaned.

I find that Bon Ami powder and a small brush works best for cleaning the mat.  The bristles on the brush allow me to get under the edges of each of the suction cups, where moisture likes to remain, which can form mold and mildew.  After I clean it I use my shower sprayer to rinse it off, then I stick it to the wall of my shower to let it air dry.  The package says it is machine washable, but I never wash any of my bath mats in the washing machine.

It's made of vinyl and claims to resist mildew and mold, but I haven't had it long enough to say if that claim is accurate or not.  I do have to make sure that all of the suction cups are pressed down firmly, as failure to do this means the mat will float when I fill my bath tub with water.

My cat can't ruin this mat, and so far I have been quite pleased with it, as it prevents slips.  It would be a good choice if you have a colored bathtub, since it's clear and your colors would show through.
