Pros:Small, no power supply is required; power is obtained from the USB port.
Cons:The Communicate Deluxe software provided in only a 30-day trial copy.
The Bottom Line: Modem is OK, but free Communicate software is hard to find, not apparent on installation screens. Deluxe version is easy to see.
This unit looks like it will be a very handy unit for users who want an external modem and a serial port is no longer provided on their hardware.

Like most external modems there are features that are often missing from built-in modems on laptops or the soft modem cards provided with many desktops.
However, the product description in the data sheet on the Zoom website is misleading when it comes to the software provided. This may or not be a problem depending on what you want to do with the modem.
As with some older external modems the fax software provided is a version of Communicate. But where the earlier modems came with a Lite version of the software that did NOT expire, the Communicate Deluxe software provided with this is only a 30-day trial copy.
But their data sheet doesn't make any mention of this fact; it states:
"Send and Receive Fax supports faxing directly from your computer when used with compatible software. Software is provided for Windows computers."
For me, this is a definite minus in any rating.
I rate the Communique/Communicate software itself very highly, and for this reason I am disappointed that Zoom doesn't provide it with this product as they did with the earlier model 2948 external modems.
You can get the CaptureFax BVRP program but it doesn't include any of the voice mail features that Communicate has; it is strictly a fax program.
After contacting Zoom, I found that the Communicate Lite is in fact also on the CD, but it is not apparent on the installations screens.
PLUS, there is another good candidate for a USB modem; one made by HIRO, which can be nfound nfor about half the price at several online stores.
