Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Handles well, comfortable seats
Cons: Transmission is geared too high
The Bottom Line: I think this car is a joy to drive, but like another reviewer stated "It is no Honda!".

I bought this car from Towne Automotive group in Orchard Park New York. It is obvious that they did not go through this car since the new front tires I requested at purchase wore unevenly. After sending the car across the street to the VW dealer for ... read more

With the 1999 New Jetta, you're never Fahr-from-drivin'...

by
Apr 17, 2005 - Updated Jan 7, 2006 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Tight handling, svelte yet subtle exterior, comfortable and cozy interior, great factory sound system.
Cons: High insurance rates, somewhat slow in 2.0L form, reliability is subpar, expensive to repair.
The Bottom Line: Volkswagen's best-selling car in the USA is a minor disappointment, both in reliability and in ownership costs. Only recommended for do-it-yourself mechanically savvy owners.

----- General Jetta Model Information ----- As the era of the 3rd Generation Jetta ('94-'99) came to an end, the new 4th Gen. model began to infiltrate dealerships as a 1999.5 model. As is the case with most 1/2 year new model introductions, ... read more

I love my Jetta...but the dealerships?

by
Sep 13, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliable. Powerful for a 4 cyclinder. Fun to drive.
Cons: Dealerships are snooty. Mechanics should learn how to change the oil.
The Bottom Line: I recommend as a first new car. Get the leather!

I purchased my í99 Jetta in January of that year and was enormously exited, this being my first new car (my previous vehicle being an indestructible í84 Volvo). Iím currently in the process of purchasing my next car and while doing so wanted to see what ... read more

German Engineering plus Mexican Assembly = CRAP!

by
Jul 28, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice, solid, heavy car. Good gas mileage. Huge trunk.
Cons: Piece o' junk
The Bottom Line: Avoid like the plague! Overall, check where your VW was made before you buy it. They seem to vary from plant to plant.

We finally unloaded our '99 Jetta, the bane of our existence. When purchasing the car initially (new) I almost didn't go for the extended warranty. Boy, am I glad I did. We got our money's worth out of it. Let's see...the transmission was never ... read more

Love it but stay away from the tan interior!

by
Feb 9, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: styling, handling, 2.0 engine
Cons: seat fabric, exterior paint, interior rattles and squeaks, not the greatest in winter
The Bottom Line: Overall this is a great German sport sedan with all the features you'd expect - however it also has the common "quirks" associated with VWs

This is my third Jetta (fifth VW). I bought the 1999 Wolfsburg last summer after my 1991 Jetta hit close to the 300,000km (188,000 miles) mark. The new Jetta has great styling, decent features although I don't find it to be as "solid" feeling as my older ... read more

by
Nov 19, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Cute car.
Cons: Inferior build quality, awful warranty, terrible customer service and too small.
The Bottom Line: Don't buy one!

This car seems like a good choice up front for people who rarely use a back seat or have small kids. We were about to have a baby and it seemed like a good size for that but we were wrong. A baby seat is big, too big for that little back seat. We also ... read more

Pros: Looks, smooth/quiet/reliable engine, reliable (so far), trunk space.
Cons: Low front (bumper/skirt easily damaged), gas mileage, rear visibility.
The Bottom Line: Recommended. Not a family car in my opinion.

So far so good... I bought my 1999 Jetta used, only 38,000 miles on it. The engine is good for city ... read more

May 28, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: looks like a luxury car but at a great price, handles wonderfully
Cons: had too many problems- see full review
The Bottom Line: I would not buy another Volkswagen. Not only because of the problems with the vehicle but also because of the horrible service I received.

My best friend's husband was the car dealer who sold it to me at $15,300 fully loaded. When I first test drove the car I knew I was in heaven. The day I went to buy the car the dealer was showing me how "cool" it was to use the key to roll down the ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Solid handling; supportive seating; useful options
Cons: Mechanical problems galore; poor warranty
The Bottom Line: You'd do infinitely better with an older BMW.

I had to drive from Indianapolis to Chicago to get my 1999 Jetta GLX - they were in short supply. I didn't bother trying to haggle with the dealer, since there were several other people who would gladly have paid sticker for the car if I'd walked. Like ... read more

More than just a cute car.

by
Apr 27, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Sporty. Good looking. Well built.
Cons: People call it cute.
The Bottom Line: There were some early problems with lemons coming off the line early on. Those were later corrected. If treated well a used 99 Jetta is a very good used car.

I purchased my Jetta at the end of October 1999, only a couple weeks after they had even been released. I was nervious about buying a brand new model at first, but my fears were unfounded. The car is sporty and fun to drive, though all trims, ... read more

Well I have always driven North American Cars. My most recent addition to my Garage was a 2002 Mustang GT Coupe... Lets just say that after 10 months with this Piece of garbage I got rid of it and bought a 1999 Jetta with 56,000k on it just off of ... read more

A Nightmare (that's fun to drive)

by
Dec 1, 2002 - Updated Oct 16, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Great styling that will age well, great fuel economy, fun to drive, too
Cons: Horrible electrical system, yukky dealership experiences
The Bottom Line: Great fun to drive and look at, but it has higher than average electrical problems that are expensive to repair. Poor dealer treatment.

I got my 1999.5 VW New Jetta in tornado red in May of '99, and I still have it (today being 16 October 03). I've taken the car on many roadtrips, and it's been a little champ on the highways--the 4-banger is peppy enough without getting me into too much ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice looking car!
Cons: Numerous problems, expensive to repair, short warranty.
The Bottom Line: I'm a first time and last time buyer of this car.

This car I purchased new in May of 1999 from our local VW AUDI dealership. It is the NEW 1999 Jetta . Often called the 1999 1/2. You could hear air noise from both front doors. When it rained water came in on the drivers side. Construction ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Engine Performance - Looks
Cons: Expensive maintenance - poor electrical system - power window problems.
The Bottom Line: Be aware of the extremely high maintenance costs - get a quote from the dealer!

I invested in the standard Jetta, 4 cyl, auto. I guess I was under the mistaken impression that all vehicles made in Germany were well made, top of the line engineered marvels - at least their prices would lead you to such a conclusion... ... read more

Bumper Car

by
Jul 29, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great looking, quiet and fun to drive.
Cons: Front bumper that rips off and VW and dealers that deny this problem.
The Bottom Line: Stay away from the Jetta until VW admits and corrects the bumper problem. Once corrected, buy it - it's a good car.

Had Jetta for less than a month, when we learned that the front bumper will literally "rip off" if you drive your tires up against the typical concrete curbs you find in most parking lots. Due to the low design of the bumper and skid plate, they hook the ... read more

Pros: None
Cons: Always in the repair shop
The Bottom Line: In the past I have recommended this car to others but I will not do that in the future.

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: safety features, trunk size, handling
Cons: poorly designed accessories, price
The Bottom Line: If you're into German engineering and don't mind paying a little extra for it, this is a nice little car.

Interior: features - manual adjustment (not power) on both front seats (identical). A "ratchet" handle on the side raises/lowers the seat. It does so at an angle leaning the seat forward when ratcheting up and leaning it back when ratcheting ... read more
