  • SUB - Sport Utility Bike Does All

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Dec 23, 1999
    Pros: Quality, Handling, Versatility, Comfort
    Cons: Price, Weight, Quirkiness

Summary: The BMW R1100R is a naked roadster, like the old standards of the Seventies, with 21st Century technology and reliability. Designed to do many tasks, it can be the only bike you own, or simply the most utilitarian. If SUVs were bikes, the R1100R would ... read more

  • Two generations old now, but still comfortable, versatile, and fun.

Pros: Torque! Comfort. Style. BWM Reliability. Versatile. ABS.
Cons: Some electrical and handling quirks. Vibration at certain speeds.

Summary: I've got the R1100R model from 1997. With minor changes until the R1150 replaced it, the R1100's were pretty much the same over their production run. I got my R used from a known source to satisfy my wife's desire to do a bit of touring on something ... read more

  • After 10 years of R1100R ownership : mixed feelings

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Apr 16, 2006
    Pros: Tough, smooth, quiet, ABS
Cons: BMW quality has declined in recent years & expensive to maintain.

Summary: I bought my R1100R brand new in 1996 & it was the 2nd model year for that design. I liked that it was smooth & quiet & those are traits that have lasted for 10 years. I've put 56,000 miles on it which is a fair amount for motorcycles in general but not ... read more

Pros: Agile, sexy, craftsmanship, unique, It's a BMW...
Cons: Intuitive steering (pay attention), costly after-all it's a BMW...

Summary: With less then 130 miles, the O-ring on the oil sending unit blew. With less then 400 miles, it found ice in my lane and went down... causing $3,000.00 damage. YET I HAVE ALREADY FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS BIKE! Nimble and prone to ... read more

Summary: PROS 1. Amazing in the twisties 2. Confident and Effective braking The R1100R is light about town, but I never knew how fantastic the bike performed until I took it to the mountains. The front (Telelever) suspension really ... read more

  • Is "Classy Motorcycle" an Oxymoron? (NO)

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community

Pros: Head-turning looks, Powerful engine, ABS, World-renowned quality, Great handling on twisties or highway.
    Cons: Clunky transmission.

Summary: The BMW Roadster is a classy bike that can go just about anywhere in style. Its appearance is stunning and its performance lets you know right away that this Beemer is no poser. Twist on your right hand and you are off like a rocket. With ... read more

  • Reliability and fun

    Pros: performance, reliability
    Cons: none

Summary: The BMW R850R is a perfectly rounded machine. Sophisticated technology, yet extreme reliability (after 10k miles and one tune-up, nothing to report except for oil changes and one new set of tires). Performs like a workhorse but can take you far above ... read more

  • A great road bike!

Pros: Handling-tremendous. Power (also) tremendous. Braking - ABS - stops on a dime!
Cons: Battery replacement is very tedious. Fuel filter replacement is brutal.

Summary: I began riding in the late 60's on an old Honda (CB77E) Super Hawk with a few BSA's, Norton's, and even a Sears-branded Ducatti ( think)on the list. BMW's were always a bit high-priced and out of my range. I got away from riding until October of '04

  • Perfect for everything

    Mar 8, 2004
Pros: Stopping, comfort on long or short trips, heated grips, smooth ride and great acceleration.
Cons: At 11,000 miles I must say I have nothing bad to say about this bike.

Summary: You got to give it to BMW for making a wonderful bike. Great at everything you could do. Handles like a sport bike on corners and hauls enough for a cross country tour without the bike even knowing. Even comfortable enough for an around town bike.
