Pros: Nimble, good fuel mileage, HD image
Cons: Vibration at high speeds, uninformed public's perception as a "little bike"

Summary: I have been riding street bikes since I was 16 years old. I had a Moto Guzzi 850T for most of my life, but last summer I bought a 2002 HD Sportster 883R to replace it. If you're considering buying this or any Sportster, let me warn you: some of the ... read more

Pros: So COOL. Its a Harley. Good sound. Brakes that work. Handles well. Why change it.
Cons: Foot pegs, too stubby, short and soft. Coughs a bit from first gear.

Summary: Yes I am in the fortunate position to now own 2 Harley Davidsons. The Wideglide with stage one and screaming eagle 2 parts I bought new in 2002, from one of the oldest Harley dealers in the world, Warrs of London. I have covered over 7,000 miles in the fi ... read more

Summary: I picked the bike up at Harley Davidson of Jonesboro on the 7th of Feb 2003. At 24 degrees F. the 50mph and under break in speed was no problem. As the shifter engaged first gear with a smart KLUNK, I pulled out of the lot and was on the ... read more

Cons: Could be a little more comfortable

Summary: I purchased a 838R in April 2002 and have put nearly 800 miles on it. It rides great (although it could be a little more comfortable) and it has plenty of power. This is a great bike for former rice burner owners (like myself) to switch up to. It ... read more

Pros: Fun! Style! Easy to ride. Harley Davidson! Made in USA.

Pros: Fantastic looks combined with a 'standard' seating position get you stares while you feel good.
Cons: It says 'Sportster' but corning is not its greatest asset.

Summary: I've had a CB450, CB750 SS, CBX, Goldwing, GS1100, FJ600, BMW R100S, BMW K100RT....need I say more? I wanted this bike the minute I saw it. My BMW sits in the garage while I've put 6,000 miles in 4 months on the 883R. Half the price of other HD's. I ... read more

  • A Practical Bike

    Feb 12, 2002 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
    Pros: Quiet ride, looks sharp
Cons: Idling back fire, seat a little uncomfortable

Summary: This is my first bike and of course I wanted a Harley. The XL 883R is not only a slim, mean looking machine but it also handles as well as it looks. This bike is destined to become a collectors item like that of it's peers. And the price is also nice. ... read more

    Jan 1, 2002 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Very nimble and plenty of H-D torque, cool looks, 1yr limited production.
Cons: Looks so good as is, it's hard to figure how to customize it.

Summary: Originally, I was considering the Kawasaki W650 (Bonneville retro). Thought that was it, until I sat on the 883R. Gut instinct? You bet. I knew this was the one for me. Had never driven or considered a Harley before. One test drive and destiny was set in ... read more

Pros: Great basic looks, reasonably priced Harley Davidson
Cons: It's a Harley... image is much greater than performance.

Summary: I haven't fully broken it in yet, but from what I can tell so far, I have made an acceptable purchase of a 2002 Harley Davidson Sportster I think I will be happy with overall. Being a BMW rider, perhaps I have too high expectations in terms of ... read more
