Everything Counts in Small Amounts...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast, cute, fun, well-built, go-kart performance, customizable.
Cons: Price, waiting-times, pricey options, no spare tire, uses premium fuel.
The Bottom Line: A pricey but well-built and practical small sports car that brings a smile to everybody's face.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, fit and finish, surprisingly large inside, endless options & ways to customize, inexpensive
Cons: With Auto Transmission can be sluggish or jerky, minor RATTLES
The Bottom Line: It's a great little car - inexpensive but really well engineered with good materials, fit and finish and fun as can be to drive.

We got our MINI Cooper (Just the "COOPER" Not the "COOPER S" which is the Sports version) about a month ago and we are thrilled - its sharp looking (and does turn heads "we love your car, it's so cute!"), surprisingly large inside for the front ...

A Great Car - Even after more than a year

Jul 03 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great acceleration (above about 100 rpm that is), fantastic handling, better than average mileage.
Cons: Quibbles with the door locks and stereo; car is no longer as exotic and cool.
The Bottom Line: The quality is great, the engineering is super, the performance is terrific, and even the gas mileage is pretty good. All that for (if you're smart) around $20000--with a supercharger!

You could consider this review a "long term ownership report." I bought mine late last year as one of the first of the new model year cars to arrive in-country, so it's now over a year old. Overall- everything good you have heard about the Mini is ...

Kick to drive, worthwhile

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Performance, handling, overall fit and finish, dealer attention to detail.
Cons: Navigation is cheesy, brake squeal is common.
The Bottom Line: Want something that will never fail to turn heads and make others around you smile? This is it.

Purchased my Cooper S in July of '06. No regrets whatsoever. Few complaints about the vehicle include only the squeal in the brakes, which the dealer has attributed to dust in the braking system and has not affected braking ability. Handling is sharp ...

Best city car around

by nyc-shopper
Jun 27 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Nimble, fun to drive, easy to park.
Cons: Rough rear ride; gas mileage not as good as you'd expect for a small car.
The Bottom Line: Get this car if you enjoy driving, especially in the city.

We've had our MINI Cooper S (automatic) for about a month, and it is an amazing piece of engineering that speaks of its BMW design--nimble handling, good power, exceptional fit and finish. The automatic may not be as quick as a manual, but it gets the ...

My first love...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Peppy, hugs curves, tons of space...with personality to spare.
Cons: Local service department can't (and doesn't want to) fix these properly.
The Bottom Line: Despite the service-related problems I've had, I LOVE this car and would never own any other!

This is my third new car and my first love. It has a personality that just makes everyone who sees it smile. My colleagues at work all want to ride in it, and passersby always ask about it, even though MINIs are becoming more and more common in this ...

Not expensive!

Pros: Room, alot just look at my review
Cons: Burning out.
I own three of these speedy cars! I love the way they look, feel and attract people. Usually I get asked " How do you like it?" And i answer them by " I love it, its fast, great looking, and cheap!" If your looking for a car thats cheap, fun to drive and takes turns like no other you have found your car. Out of the three I own I only had one problem and that was, burning out! I car is quick and easy to handle, but there isn't enough power to burn out.

If you have kids, this is the car. The cooper has room for a good size family, and is quite quiet. If you decide to buy this car, look no further, this is the car for you!

Pros: Handling, Gas Mileage, looks,
Cons: cup holders, Premium Gas, Brake dust.
I have had the car for 6 months and still love it. Awesome handling, good acceleration and good gas mileage. Rear leg room is non existent (ITS A MINI!) needs better cup holders.
Very easy to order custom look, and lots of aftermarket suppliers.

do not buy this car if you want decent gas mileage

Pros: drives nicely, has cargo space
Cons: gas mileage, horn logo, brakes, MINI service
I bought the 2006 MINI Cooper S and am only getting 22-23 mpg (NOT just city driving and less than the average 27 expected). It has a stick.

I asked MINI about it and they said that they do not guarantee their gas mileage, that if there is no indicator light there is nothing they will do for me. They say that the design was changed so the 2006 has worse aerodynamics than the 2005 (I don't believe them).

The brakes squeak. Again, MINI tells me there is nothing wrong with the brakes.

The logo over the horn bends if you actually hit the horn. In order to fix this, they have to replace the whole airbag unit! In order to not bend it, you have to hit the rim circling the horn (like you're thinking about that when someone's about to hit you!). Poor design.

It drives fine, but I'm really ticked off about the above issues and would never have bought this car if I realized that the estimated gas mileage would be so far off.

Pros: classy, zippy, fun, good touring car because the visibility is great, decent trunk for size
Cons: oddly, ergonomics oddly aren't great for a small person; worse gas mileage than expected
I like small cars & this one is much classier than anything else in its price range. Certainly it has much more power. It's a fun car, with a very enthusiastic following for those interested in online communities. Parking is a breeze. There's definitely plenty of headroom, for me as a small person & even for those riding with me who are taller than 6 feet.

The issue is that as the driver I simply find the geometry being in front of the wheel rather uncomfortable, even after making various adjustments (steering height, seat height, lumbar, etc.). Though it has "go kart handling" the steering is more effortful than I'd hoped, & certainly compared to my past vehicle.

I'll have fun with this, but next time around may opt for something more fuel efficient & comfortable over the stylishness.

Think about the tires

Pros: Fun. Open up garage space. Worth it.
Cons: well, not much extra space but, then again, it is a Mini
The run flat tires last about 10K miles (less than a year of typical driving) and run about $1500. Count that into your monthly payment.

Can go with non-run-flat (less than half the price of run flat) and a $30 spare repair kit.

2006 Mini Cooper S

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Cute, fast
Cons: Uses premium gas, challenging to drive, expen$ive, dealer markup
The 2006 Mini Cooper S is cute, fun to drive, and very fast. It's way techie if you add on options like Xenon headlamps and intelligence in the steering wheel.

You will not - repeat not - find discounts on new Mini's. In California and some other places they add on extra markup.

The thing most people will find challenging is that steering and shifting are very precise. The steering wheel has no "play", the slightest turn and the car turns. The manual shifter (almost all Minis are manual) can be difficult, you'll find yourself in reverse instead of 1st, 3rd instead of 5th, etc.

Pros: Handling, Style
Cons: Dealers only seem to carry the weird color combos
This probably the best handling car that I've driven. You can totally hook cars and go nuts doing donuts. Super easy to park which is handy for me since I live in downtown San Francisco. It's engineered extremely well.
