Not Really Trying To Keep Up With The Competition... And Succeeding.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Agile handling, tight steering, characterful Saab quirks, exceptionally comfortable seats.
Cons: Slow-revving V6, laggy throttle response, button-intensive dashboard, chassis limited by front-drive layout.
The Bottom Line: The 9-3 is an emotional choice, not a logical one, as its dynamics aren't as good as a 3-Series' or C-Class'. For some buyers, though, it's probably close enough.

My Experience 2006 has been quite a year for new car releases. With all the revised and redesigned models hitting the market at once, I haven't been able to drive half the new vehicles I'd like to. The Saab 9-3 Aero, though, is one that snuck ...

Two more cylinders and a lower price--time for a 9-3?

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Thoroughly competitive car at a reasonable price
Cons: Even in Aero form a bit bland; cramped rear seat
The Bottom Line: A thoroughly reasonable premium compact, but passion is lacking. Saab needs a new Viggen.

For 2006 the Saab 9-3 received a wagon variant and a new engine for the top-of-the-line Aero, a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 good for 250 horsepower. I've been wanting to sample the new Aero wagon--SportCombi in Saab-speak--with a manual transmission. But ...

An affordable, sporting and appealing alternative "sport sedan"

Sep 13 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Classy styling, better quality, good compromise between performance and convenience, turbo power, good MPG.
Cons: Styling too conservative for some, some turbo lag, maintenance can get pricey after warranty.
The Bottom Line: A great performance/near-luxury sports sedan at a very competitive price. It has a few quirks, but those that appreciate good design and practicality along with fun will have a blast!

I should start off by clarifying. I own a 2005 model Saab 9-3 "Linear" 2.0t Sport Sedan, and my father just purchased a 2006 9-3 Aero V6. This review will cover both vehicles. Also, for some strange reason (probably GM's positioning of Saab as a ...

9-3 SportCombi 2.0 is Best All Around Vehicle in its Class

by apx2fly
Mar 19 '06 - Updated Apr 29 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: comfort, performance, carrying space, apparent safety, efficiency, great A/C and heater, gorgeous
Cons: 4-cyl. not available in Aero, road noise, quality glitches, nav system limited and confusing
The Bottom Line: If the social responsibility of size compromise is your thing, the comfort, performance, carrying space and efficiency of the 2.0 SportCombi is probably as good as it gets.

The 2006 9-3 SportCombi (2.0 M5) is a dream machine – probably the car Saab has always wanted to build. I’ve owned many different model year Saab variants, and this one by far tops them all. As much as I loved my 2004 9-3 4-Door Aero A5, this ...

Great alternative!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fresh, sporty look. Great handling and engine! Superb seats, interior geometry/layout and sound system!
Cons: Interior quality is not among the best! Bridge stones makes for a bumpy ride!
The Bottom Line: This car is as good as the Audi A4! What it lacks in interior quality it makes up for with its superior seats and the fantastic engine! Fresh, different look!

I must say I really enjoyed both the look and feel of this car! It's exterior is a surprisingly pleasing mix of Italian-like lines and German-like robustness. In fact this is one of the most robust looking cars I've ever tested! The interior is not ...

Okay car... lots of kick for the $

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, included maintenance, fun to drive, interior room, controls on steering wheel
Cons: RAIN AND WINDOWS, stupid "butterfly" cupholder, mediocre "premium" stereo, brake dust, touchy clutch/shifter
The Bottom Line: Great car for the money, maintenance coverage is great, lease payments low (especially for GM discount), good looking too!

I have a bright red 9-3, five speed, loaded up with park assist, entertainment package, winter package & xenons. I was contemplating a 325xi or C280 4matic when I was in the market for this car, but given that the pricing and included options on the ...

Pros: It Rockets-intuitive controls-kickin’ sound Sporty-handles like a bmw Stops on a dime
Cons: “Next” button inconsistent (radio) Performance tuning not good on bumpy roads Bumper brushes parking stops
The Bottom Line: Love it - recommend it!

Purchased the 2006 9-3 Aero in March of 2006. So as of today, I've got 7 months of testing this car. Just had my 10,000 mile check up (free)- this is a 3 year lease. No major problems. All of the maintenance intervals to 50,000 miles came with the ...

Pros: Very fast, awesome transmission.  Excellent service.
Cons: Front end on sport Aero model about 4 inches from ground - hits everything.
The Bottom Line: I love this car and would buy another in a heartbeat.

Awesome car, like a bat our of hell.  I bought the 6 cylindar SportCombi Aero with the Sentronic 6-speed manual/auto transmission. Figured that was the only way to compensate for the CVS transmissions they all have now.  Love everything about ...

Pros: Mid-speed (30-70) punch like a bat out of Hell. Seats.Style.
Cons: a few rattles and squeeks. Not as solid as my Jag.
The Bottom Line: The Aero is a TREMENDOUS value.

I've now logged over 5K miles on my 2006 9-3 Aero (V6 Turbo), and I have to say it's one of the most fun cars to drive that I've ever owned (Jag, BMW and VW's). First thing I would recommend for any new owner do - sign up for the FREE Aero Driving ...

2006 Saab 9-3 is the best all-around car at an affordable price!

Pros: Affordable luxury, fun to drive, highest safety ratings, very reliable...I LOVE my 2006 Saab 9-3!
Cons: Saab dealers are few and far between. It makes scheduled maintenance covered under warranty difficult.
The Bottom Line: Do your homework and you will see this car is a smart decision. Affordable luxury...highest safety ratings...not to mention it's fun to drive! The best vehicle in it's class!!!

My husband and I have owned the 2006 Saab 9-3 for eight months and have put 15,000 miles on it so far. He is a Marine Corps pilot and we have made two very long distance moves with this vehicle. We had researched vehicles for approximately one year ...

2006 2.0T SportCombi with manual trans
by cwbram
Nov 23 '05
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Feels and handles great, power, good mileage, yet to see another SportCombi on the road.
Cons: Complicated radio controls - Standard seats are comfortable but sport seats should be an option.
My wife and I bought the SportCombi last week. Since we have two kids, we couldn’t get the sports car we would otherwise buy. Driving the SportCombi, it is very easy to forget it's a wagon not a sports coupe.

Looked at some other wagons - the wife didn't like the Audi and I didn't like the dealer. I liked the Subaru Legacy GT wagon – the wife didn’t. BMW was much more expensive, slightly smaller, and did not drive noticeably better in normal conditions.

All the classic Saab elements are present. The controls such as the center console ignition and green / red gauges give it a unique feel. It drives like a tight Euro sports sedan with the peaky turbo engine. I miss these things now when I drive other cars – starting to understand the Saab cult.

This wagon is definably worth a look if you are considering a mid-size wagon or small SUV.

$30,000 piece of junk
by dfstillwagon
Sep 07 '06
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Exterior Appearance, comfortable seats
Cons: Cheap interior.
This car handles like a Chevy with a $30,000 price tag. It can barely handle a corner above 35 miles per hour. The only thing going for it is the exterior. The interior double display (dashboard & audio panel) doesn't make sense nor does the single CD player below the temperature controls when the Radio, etc is above the temperature controls.

The funniest part is that the Saab dealer that sold me this car kept trying to impress upon me that it was a "luxury car." Think twice before buying this "luxury piece of junk."

This car handles nothing like the 2001 BMW 325Ci I used to drive and that is BMW's entry luxury coupe.

Best bang for the buck

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: styling, interior comfort, trunk size, cabin room, mileage
Cons: stereo funkyness and idiosyncrasies of trip computer, gets me tickets
have 38000 miles on it, use for long trips primarily. car is super comfortable for two adults and small child, gets fantastic gas mileage - easily over 31mpg running 75-85. Drove from Acapulco to border running over 100 most of the way averaged 25mpg - not bad. seats were fantastic but now the drivers seat is starting to flatten out (i'm 200lbs 6'2") which does not impress me. interior markings on switches are starting to wear off on recirc button which i use all the time. Trip computer has a mind of its own. the global reset feature doesn't always work right which is extremely annoying on long trips. I just ruined the handling of this car by putting bridgestones re960 PPs on it. pirellis had a much stiffer side wall - and a higher load rating, which makes a big difference in the handling and general feel. knock on wood, never had to take it into the dealer. bought this instead of new BMW I thought I always wanted. Would buy again. paid 28k for it
