Pros: Drives serenely, rides solidly, tastefully finished. Cons: Middling rear seat comfort, conflict between driver’s armrest and cupholder, syrupy transmission, blue-chip pricing. The Bottom Line: The E-Class could be called the Camry of its class. It’s a stodgy, traditional car—and, thus, a bit boring—but is comfy, well-rounded, and oozes quality.

Pros: Every piece of technology you wanted from the $100,000 S-class for half the price... Cons: ...with a cluttered interior and a mismatched exterior. The Bottom Line: When Benz copied the S550, they should have done it wholesale. Even though the E is a great car, it seems as if the design teams weren't communicating enough.

Pros: Looks expensive, feels solid, composed chassis, supportive seats Cons: Dead steering, seats too firm for many The Bottom Line: Steering that isolates the driver from the car keeps me from recommending it, despite many other strengths. Does look and feel expensive.
