Pros: Price and quality of CD it makes is not compromised. An OK player Cons: only has 2X speed recording from recorded CD - 4 X would be nice.
The features list on this site has MANY errors! This unit HAS: Analog and digital record level control (manual), CD Synchro, CD text, Disk Naming, a headphone jack (1/4 inch); and (obviously) it reads CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I don't know if it reads...

Does it ever work?
by roonerjeff ,Jul 26 '05
Pros: Looks nice. Cons: Major logic problems, unit failures
Bought this unit in July 2002 for $299.99 at Best Buy. In the hope of transferring old out of print LPs to cd. The unit sort of recorded while under warranty. Since then it has been very spotty.
Today (7/25/05) I tried to record an LP and the unit just stopped after the 3 or 4th track. In fact on the 4th attempt it froze in the middle of the second track. It simply stops and accepts no commands from the remote or unit buttons.
I would steer clear of this product new or used on Ebay.
I have several wonderful Phillips products such as the dvd 580M, but this unit is worthless.

DON'T BUY IT
by eiggerl ,Aug 12 '05
Pros: Very unique piece of equipment and the features are awesome Cons: It's not worth the money. TOOOOOO many problems and not enough support from the manufacturer
It is a very faulty product. It shouldn't make a difference what brand of cd's you puchase the thing should still record. At first I had a JVC recorded with I purchased as an open box deal. I still have it but it records when it wants to. I would much prefer that over the philips brand. Calling Philips is a nightmare because you have to listen to all of the stupid voice prompts. I've be a DJ for over 16 years and my one of my long term projects was to record over 3000 lps to cd but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen anytime soon. I guess I'll revert to the cassette deck..

Worst Piece of Junk I've Ever Owned
by monkeydrunk ,Dec 11 '04
Pros: When the unit did function, the controls were very user friendly and intuitive. Cons: It doesn't work.
The Philips CDR 778 is a horrifically faulty piece of equipment. Temperamental and error prone, Philips has had to replace my unit four times due to malfunction that apparently could not be fixed by service personnel. Each unit that I have owned has had a shorter life span than its predecessor despite the decrease in use with each subsequent unit. The main problem that I have encountered in every single unit, is the CDR drive fails to recognize that there is a CD in the tray as I receive a "No Disk" error. Philips is a respected name in electronics and I am sure that they can make some fine products. However, I have been so dissatisfied with my unit that at this point I cannot imagine myself ever knowingly purchasing a Philips brand product again.
