Pros: Excellent sound quality and extended battery life. Cons: Unit does not have microphone input or remote jack.
Well it’s quickly approaching that time of year again and the dilemma of what to purchase for those difficult people is upon us. And trust me, my daughter is on that list! Knowing that she loves her music, I decided to purchase a mini disk Walkman for...
Pros: Cheap, portable, good sound quality and long play mode Cons: No mic input, unintuitive controls, a little plasticky
First, I must admit and declare that I am a big fan of Minidisc--having used the format for about 6 years--and so this review is written from the standpoint of a minidisc fan. This model was recently discontinued, but is still available from discounters...
Pros: Never skips, uses cheap interchangeable media, decent quality audio Cons: Long cumbersome outdated recording process, next generation adds USB (absolutely necessary)
I bought this a few years ago (maybe 2000 or so) on a whim. It was an open box discount, and I planned on trying it out and possibly returning it. I never did though. First, the best things about it. It uses MD's, which are cheap (get for $1 each ...
Pros: Highly upgradeable/hackable
Long battery life
Excelent sound quality (on LP2 mode)
Shiny and pretty
Cons: Battery "bulge"
Made by Sony
Realtime recording
A lot of stuff not built in
Hi all. Before I start rambling, I will say this review is to state the standard and hackable features the MZ-R500 has to offer. First off, I want to let you all know that i hate sony... They incorperate the latest and greatest techonlogies ...
Pros: Has everything needed for a recorder Cons: Can buy the newer MZ-R55
I bought the MZ-R50 while I was in Japan 2 summers ago. I feel that I might have made a mistake by buying early since new audio products have followed it--the much smaller, MZ-R55 with indiglo remote stick, and Rio MP3 players.
Pros: Great sound, cool remote, nice and portable Cons: Not cheap, overheats while recharging, poor record control
After watching the ads that introduced the R-50 during "Must-See-TV Thursday," Gadgetgrrl was literally in a sweat to get her hands on this hot commodity. Retail being (as always) slower than virtual reality, she was forced to buy it from a...
I'll start off my saying this may even be one of the greatest MD players.
I've read alot of reviews on this unit before I purchased it used over ebay because Sony stoped making it. But after hearing all about how great it is, I wanted to put...
Pros: Cheap, Compact, Lots of music Cons: Real-time recording, quality loss at MDLP4
I've had my tries at MP3 players, but they never impressed me much. The problem is that with MP3 players I'm always attached to a PC. If I want new music I have to go to my computer and transfer over music for listening. Then there's the problem of...
Pros: Great sound quality, input/output options, large LCD on unit, slim portable size! Cons: End-search button! Inconvenient for recording!
Minidisc Mania (or lack of)
Minidisc is already a very big thing in Japan. It’s been around forever (well, about a decade and a half is forever in today’s terms…). However, it’s only recently become more popular in other countries around the...
Pros: Excellent Battery life! Awesome audio quality, even in LP4 mode Cons: no backlight, manual song titling, no remote
Well, I finally decided to try a Mini Disc player, I was looking locally (at Sears), not a major variety there mind you.. Sony and Sharp closeouts.. I wanted to save some money, so I bought the least expensive one they had, the Sharp SR-60.. I had it a...
Pros: Ease of use, No skipping, Size Cons: No Backlit display
The great thing about minidisc is their portability. They are small enough to fit in your pocket, yet they pack as ound that is identical to CDs (to most people). The Sony MZ-R50 is a great minidisc player that lets the music of minidisc come to...
Pros: Small, easy to use, no stupid remote, great battery life. Cons: Headphones are cheap.
I recently purchased a Sony MZ-R500 from Best Buy ($179) to replace my home MD deck which just broke. I thought that a portable player/recorder would be the perfect replacement. I was right!
About a year ago I bought an Audiophase portable...
Pros: Compact, Light weight, Decent sound quality Cons: Quite a few actually... see review for details
Sony MZ-R500PC
Here is the "lowdown" on this device. First of all don't let the salesman tell you that these MD players produce CD quality sound. They don't, although the difference is very small. You will notice this especially when using...
Pros: Decent price for the average MiniDisc user Cons: Awkward interface, lack of a Mic jack poses problems for live recording
In addition to my hobbies of reading, cooking, and computers I am also an avid music collector and aficionado--also, I am a classical musician (working on my master's degree in performance). I bought this MiniDisc recorder with the hopes of using it as...
Pros: Small, good battery life, recordable Cons: Don't like the door design
I've been trying to set up a system for a while now, and the MZ-R50 is a piece of that system. I love the Minidisc format. I do most of my music listening in the car, and CD's in the car are a pain (unless you have a changer, in which case changing...
Pros: Its a great mini disk player Cons: The price is a little high
The Sony MZ-R50 is one of the best minidisk players that I think is out there. They all of the sudden became more popular and they technology they provide is definitely state of the art.
Not to long ago most people were still using Discmans...
Pros: Great sound, great batttery life, good media Cons: $$$ (compared to CD-R or Mp3)
I was reborn about a year ago. Reborn by way of the Sony MZ-R50 minidisc recorder that is. The MZ-R50, in my opinion is just about the best portable recorder you can get for under 300 dollars. It has all of the features that are important in a...
Pros: Excellent build quality, the last "hand-made" recorder from Sony Cons: A little big, expensive, I recommend getting a player and leaving this home.
The MZ-R50 is maybe the best MiniDisc portable ever made, in terms of quality. It may not have the features or size of the newer models like the MZ-R90, but it will last ten times longer. The body is a full magnesium case, all the internal parts are made...
Pros: Thin, Excellent Sound, Jog dial, batt life, build quality Cons: Lots of annoying features!
I have just bought a Sony MZ-R50, and I have had it for 10 days now. Overall I am a bit disappointed with it, as there are some little things about it which are very annoying:
1. The recorder cannot do an Analogue synchro, only a digital one,...
Pros: Excellent value,
MDLP! fit up to 300 min on a $2 disk
Battery life Cons: learning curve to figure out all functions
Reason for purchasing
I have been considering the purchase of an mp3 player for 3 yrs but couldn't justify $200-$300 for something that only holds 8-20 songs. I read a few reviews on mini disk vs mp3 and decided to try the cheap sony minidisk as it...
Pros: Nice features, compact size, good sound Cons: Not so durable, occasional sound flaws, no lighted screens
I bought the MZ-R50 because it's the best of all worlds. It's extremely compact and portable, and provides a good range of options for recording. Playback is easy, and with 40 seconds of shock protection, it doesn't skip. At $300 it seemed a good...
When I bought my MZ-R50 from a friend a year ago, I thought it'd be a good alternative to the old beat up walkman that I'd been using for years. Talk about an understatement.
I picked up the player from my friend a year ago, and didn't really...
Pros: Quality, size, price, remote, recording capabilities, optical connection, data protection Cons: Hassle to find one new.
I spent a long time looking for the ideal portable music device, and quickly, CD was out of the question, mainly due to the bulkyness. I had narrowed everything down to MD or MP3.
I didn't like the idea of passing everything through...
This minidisc player and recorder is not worth its price. You can find a cheaper player and recorder that does exactly what this one does. I think you are only paying for the Sony name. However, there are some good points about this player. For...
Pros: ability to record, sound, no shock Cons: none!
With all new technology being developed so fast, it is quite hard to keep up with these expanding growth times and being able to decifer which is worthy of buying and which is not.
The Sony MiniDisc MR-R70 is definitely worth the $269.00 of...
Pros: Perfect portable audio recording device. Many features. Cons: Battery life isn't that great.
When I got my first minidisc player/recorder, being the Sony MZ-R50, I was overwhelmed with excitement. I couldn't wait to get it out of the box and start recording some of my favorite music to the compact minidiscs. Seeing it for the first time, just...
Pros: Great sound, versatile, recordability Cons: high price, have to buy adapters
For many years people have had to deal with the poor quality of sound cassettes produced, and the fragileness of Compact Discs. Recently, new technologies have created a way to burn CD's, however these CD's scratch very easily, and skip very much. Now...
Pros: Light, durable, great sound, handy remote Cons: recording takes a little practice and reading
A mini disc player is not cheap. So when you buy one, you do your research. I did, and boy am I glad! I love my Sony MZ-R37! First of all it is small, lightweight and durable so that it can take the beatings of school and still work perfectly when...
Pros: Awesome Awesome Awesome!!! Cons: Hmmm one day perhaps but not today!
I bought the Sony MZR-50 as a gift to myself about 2 years ago. Let me begin by saying that I prefer to listen to this device more than my Portable Compact disk player or my Diamond Multi Media Rio Player.
Although I will admit that it is much...
Pros: Price, overall quality. Cons: VERY Spartan in functions, plastic feel, and bland appearance.
The MZ-R500 is a great MDLP Minidisc recorder priced to sell. Its sound is great, and it records well--- however, this is true of nearly ALL Sony MD players. What stands to question here is if you're getting what you pay for. In my opinion, YES, you...
Pros: Great sound, convenient, compact, good quality Cons: no belt attachment, too expensive to take out running
I bought my MZ-R50 in 1999. So it is almost 5 years old this year. Although I have not used it day in and day out, it's still seen a fair amount of use. The unit is small, sleek, and the user interface elements on it just feel right. The unit is ...
Pros: Affordable price & ease of use Cons: No remote control, paint on exterior chips easily
The Sony MZ-R500 was my first portable minidisc player/recorder unit. The main reason to purchase this unit was the price. This unit is the base model unit offered by Sony. At a price of $299 Canadian or at around $190 USD it is by far one of the...
Pros: Good battery life, good sound Cons: oh several things...just generally difficult
This thing is ok, I guess. It's certainly not the bomb. Here are my mine gripes:
- No belt clip, arm band, or anything? I bought this for running. Sucks to be me. Oh but it came with a mailer for a free arm band. Got that. It's not very easy...
Pros: MDLP compatabilty, easy transfer of songs via PCLink Cons: lacks many features of similarly priced players, no rechargable battery
Let me start by saying that I'm not a Sony basher. Exactly opposite. I like Sony and many of my home theater components are Sony. In this case however, I would recommend you go elsewhere for a minidisc player. You'll get a whole lot more, for less....
Pros: Fairly Cheap, Nice Looking, Good Sound Quality. MDLP! Batter Life A+ Cons: No remote, functions are a pain to get to...
After heavy research, i decided to go with a mz-r500. I was debating between a mz-r900, and mz-g750, of course i went with the cheapest. What was drawing me towards the others was that the g750 has an am/fm tuner and i had really wanted that, but since...
Pros: MDLP2/4, Price, Battery Life, Portability, Anti-Shock Cons: No remote, No live recording, PC-link
When I got the MD player, I was impress with its size and portability. Although I was disappointed that it didn't include an ac adopter nor a remote, I was happy with the size and the look of the unit.
After using the unit I was very impressed with...
Pros: Good sound and antiskip protection. Cons: No remote, belt clip, backlight. Digital volume control. Earbuds sound quality very poor.
Even though there is no fancy remote, the player is so small it s like a remote itself.. the CD mechanism is a little slow.. takes a few good seconds to play/search/record . Battery life is very good even when recording. My unit didnt come with a AC...
Pros: Small size, sound quality, Excellent sound quality Cons: Battery drain, no radio
I received my minidisc player/recorder as a gift in late 1998. At the time it was pretty cutting edge and there were only a few options to choose from. Since then, I'm sure the technology has advanced but here are some thoughts on this model and...
Pros: Very compact and light, easy to use, very good anti-skip protection. Great battery life. Cons: No AC adopter and no rechargeable battery.
I wanted MD unit for a long time now, since they came out on the market a few years ago. The reason it took me so long to buy one, is because the prices were very high. However, when mp3 players came out, MD players suddenly dropped in price. Some higher...
Pros: Four CDs on one MD! Weighs very little and looks superb. Cons: No remote control and rubbish headphones.
I recently sold my Sharp portable MD to a friend, who was delighted to have finally invested in new technology! My plan was to use the money to buy a simple portable player, having already bought a decent hi-fi separate for the recording chores. However,...
Let me tell you I am a very selective person. I do much research before I make my purchases and thanks to other epinions I can make great decisions. I puchased one of these players off yahoo auctions and I have been nothing but pleased. The sound...
Pros: Battery life, Sound quality Cons: No back-light on the remote control
I have been using this Unit for about a year now. I have found it to be convenient and reliable. The battery lasts for many hours on the recharge and the remote control capabilities are awesome. My only gripe is the fact that the remote control does...
Pros: easy to use, intuitive interface, long battery life Cons: no longer produced, slightly larger than newer models, does not have most recent codec
this was my first MD portable. it's wonderful. user-friendly, long battery life, and great sound quality. many intuitive features make this THE best all-around player. it only has 2 cons:
-does not have most recent ATRAC codec, no type R...
My colleague and I both bought the Sony MZR-55 unit in the same time frame. We had a mutual friend who had a MZ-50, and had nothing but good things to say about it. We both bought our units at a Circuit City in Fairfax, VA: I bought mine on March 14,...
Pros: rewritable, compact sturdy Cons: not for casual user
When MD's first came on the market it was just Sony and Phillips that really were trying to get them past just a pro-audio gimmick. The full Sony line of MD recorders makes them as affordable as a mid-line CD player. It's easy to get confused as to...
Pros: easy to use, small size Cons: cant run with it
The MZ-R50 is very easy to use. Recording or playing music is a breeze and with the remote on the headphone wire it very easy to operate if you were to wear the unit while lifting weights, riding a bike or running on a treadmill etc....Recording a CD is...
Pros: tons of wonderful features, great investment Cons: a bit pricey
Sony mini-disc players and recorders are far better than any other brand I've tested. The recording quality is excellent, and the features are much more simple and organized. I love the way this one is set up because the controls are completely...
Pros: Good, quality music Cons: What's the purpose of a mini disc player?
My friend recently bought this product, and I must say that it is a top of the line mini disc player. Sound was great, and so was the quality of the music. But what is the point of having a mini disc player?
Pros: small, easy to operate, long battery life Cons: titling function, no optical output
Overall I have found the MZ-R50 to be a great portable Mini Disc recorder.
I am a music education major, and originally purchased this to record myself and my private students. The sound quality is great even with an inexpensive mic. I have also...
Pros: Easy to use, Has the jog dial Cons: Older models do not have the backlit remote
The Sony MD-R50 is an older model of the Sony Minidisc player line of products, but it is one of the best. It is a little larger than the newer models of portable and recordable MD players, but it gets quite a bit more battery time due to it's larger...
i have been using my mzr-30 recorder to record live concerts. This little machine is the best sound quality. There is only one little thing that i don't care for on this unit. The unit does not have a light for the display to see when it is dark.If you...
Pros: Light Weight, Looks Great, Good for Runners Cons: Expensive
The Sony MZ-R50 Mini Disc Player is unbelievable. First of all it is as simple to use as any portable CD player. Now I thought it would be a pain to make the minidisc's because I personally like listening to mixes. With the help of Winamp (I've reviewed...
Pros: durable, compact, good price, never skips, good sound Cons: unintuitive interface in some areas,
Sony's MZ-R50 is a nice minidisc. It is affordable (or at least more affordable than some of the higher end models), reasonably compact, and can play and record. It actually has a nice variety of recording options, one of the most useful being mic...
Pros: low cost of media Cons: high price of device and difficulty of use
When i bought this i was hovering between MiniDisc and MP3. I wanted alot of playtime so i got the minidisc because blank tapes are fairly cheap, compared to flash card for MP3 players. This is still the case, but not for long I fear. Due to recent...
Pros: Tiny, lightweight, long battery life, good sound quality, sturdy unit. Cons: No equaliser controls - otherwise close to perfection.
I have had this player for about two years now and I can safely say it is the single best piece of consumer electronics I have ever owned. It's tough, it plays for a ridiculous amount of time on a single AA battery, it has great sound quality and it's rel ...
Pros: MDLP ability, great value Cons: few options, weight
For what it's worth this is a pretty good MD Walkman. But it is rather low end. It's heavy compared to the higher end models. The unit does not come with a remote, and does not even have a jack for one if you would like to purchase one in the future....
Pros: Easy to use, Excellent sound, SIZE! Battery Life. Cons: No Microphone. No remote.
I received the MZR-500pc for Christmas after having researched about minidiscs for months beforehand, and all of my begging paid off! This is an excellent product, which has all of the characteristics I was looking for. It is tiny (fits in any pocket),...
Pros: Very light weight, very good sound even on LP4, easy to work with the PClink. Cons: Doesn't come with microphone.
I'm very happy to have one of this Mini-Disc.
It's very light and easy to work with. Although, it is my first Mini-Disc was really easy to start working with the several features available, including the PClink.
Reference the MD...
Pros: Size, recording, battery life Cons: Earphones
The Sony MZ-R50 is a great portable mini disc player/recorder. This unit is very small and very durable. Recording is very easy and sounds great. I record from my computer and from my stereo most of the time. The volume of this unit is a little low,...
Pros: long battery life, up to 5 hours or music on 1 mini disc Cons: hard alphanumeric entry, takes 5 hours top record 5 hour mini disc
The MZ-R500 Mini Disc Walkman is the best walkman i've seen for its price. Its relativaly cheap, and is for those who want a minidisc player for listening to music ONLY. There is no external microphone for voice recording, which is a pretty big negative...
The mz-r50 is fantastic. I got mine through a friend in Sony in Australia and it is the best money I have spent in some time. I used to cart my portable CD to and from work and got fed up with the size (it doesn't fit in your shirt pocket) and the...
Pros: 30 secs antiskip, geek clip (see picture), good battery life Cons: track splicing/volume adjustment while recording
Mine was stolen; and I think I'm going to buy another one. My choices were this,
CD burner, Minidisc, or MP3's. When I was making the choice initially, the Rio
was just coming out. I didn't own a portable cd player, or a cd burner, I did ...
Pros: Overall a very good robust unit. Ive had mine since Christmas 98. Cons: Dont record w/MD on vibrating source. Will never record again. No MDLP or backlit display/remote
I already owned one but bought another since the recording option stopped working on my original unit due to placing recording on a vibrating amp while recording. I was informed a new laser would fix the problem since it still plays my discs fine but i also found out to replace laser would cost just as much as buying a new one so thats exactly what I did. I now keep the non recording model for everyday use and keep the new one for recording only. I use it to record my band and it does an amazing job of this. It records so well that I had to buy another one. Overall a good unit. My only wish is that the remote and display were backlit and that it had MDLP.
A Wonderful Step Up In The World!!! by stuie_c69 ,Dec 19 '03
Pros: Everything Cons: No Mic. Input
I bought this minidisc player when i was 13 years old. Now im 16 and its still cutting edge technology. I reccomend these players over cd-players or discmans!
the mdlp is great it... by nickb_dt3000 ,Aug 13 '02
the mdlp is great it really allows you to utilize the full space of the disc. the battery life is also great. the only problem i have found is that there is no remote - a bit anoying at times because you can't adjust the volume etc when you out and about. the price i think is the best thing about it - at only £95 it was a steal!!!!

I've had this unit for almost 2 years now and have very little cons. It is very mobil. When have the right cable, one could just about record from anything and anywhere. Also can be connected to home hifi system for playback. The controls are large enough to press thru pocket and case to operate. Remote would be nice though. Would and have recommended md to others.
I found that the mz-r500 has good sound quality, is quite easy to use as well but is so big and bulky and comes with no remote that sound quality or long play don't matter. The mz-r500 is just so big and heavy and ugly that the reason to why it is so cheap is because its so ugly compared to other better quality mds. Only buy this if you are very short on cash this christmas. I hate this md so much that i refuse to even use it or yet admit that i own it.

the mzr500 has 48 hours play back which is very good it has all the features of a expensive minidisc recorder except for microphone in and jog dial it is jog proof and it is very easy to use i don't knowe why people say that it is not easy to use when i'm 13 and i found it easy on the first day i had it it is also cheap i got mine for £130 in december

this is the best thing ive ever had.i bought it for a realy expensive price when it came out but now they have all the new players its out of date , not to worry you can upgrade it easily just go to minidisc.org
I'm not sure why Sony chose not to include a remote with this model. My last MD walkman was just a base player model from 1998 and it even came with a remote. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints - great sound, easy to use and it fits into a pair of flat front pants!
Every since I bought my Sony MZ-R500 I have been extremely pleased with the machine.
In all honesty it is very easy to use, supports MDLP, and goes forever on a single AA battery.
Only with severe jolts have I been able to get it to skip. Usually I just put it in to a pocket and forget that it is there.
The controlls do take a while to get use to, but after a while they are not too difficult to use. It would be nice if it would have a option to combine tracks.
I would highly recommend this machine to anyone. One word of warning is that it does not have a microphone jack - but you can buy preamp mics that will work with the line in port.
the product was very easy to use, i had it recording in 5 min. after opened and palying right after i recorded. easy to use, although read the manual, dont be like me and learn as you paly around with it. i think it is well worth the money, i bought mine for $109 and these things are nice. i would recommend to anyone who doesnt want a super fancy pantsie MD player, but wants one to just record and play. defanilty worth the money.
The Md is great. Espically when i modified it to have the Mz-R900 features..(most of them). Lp4 is the bomb recording like 64 songs. But after a while its get boring wanna change it now :/

Over all, the MZ-R500 is a pretty nice minidisc player/recorder. It was farley simple to use and hardly sucked down the batteries. The only real problem I had was, when setting up the thing to record, it would either split or merge songs together where I didn't want it to. But for the price I got it for, I didn't mind much after awhile. I think this is a good intro minidisc player for the skeptic to try out.
