Unsafe Sub!!

by sam-pro Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 11 '03
Pros: Low price.Sounds nice.Looks attractive.
Cons: Very very unstable.Built in amp is of very low quality. An outright FIRE HAZARD! BEWARE!
This is going to be a very short review and you will not find any cute or entertaining remarks as I feel that this subwoofer has a serious and hazardous flaw in its design and it bothers me that the manufacturer has apparently not corrected the problem ...

Great Subwoofer for a Great Price

by Chris_93 , Sep 12 '01
Pros: Great sound for the price, very well built, powered, auto shut off works well.
Cons: Could be louder. Sensitive to room placement
I have been into home audio for a couple of years now, and have been looking for something that would boost the bass in my system. While walking through Costco one day I saw this subwoofer for $100. With Costco's liberal return policy I said why not? I...

KLH is the value KING!

by glock-user , Jun 20 '01
Pros: Extreme value!
Cons: None that I have found.
I purchased this sub because it was powered and I could afford it. I got the whole thing for $119 from Amazon.com using a coupon from dealprovider.com. I have been EXTREMELY impressed with it. I know good speakers. I use Polk audio as my center, front,...

Unbelievable

by gdawson44 , Apr 22 '02
Pros: loud, boomy, inexpensive
Cons: sparse manual
I didn't think a 10" speaker was going to add anything to my regular system, which had a pair of 15" woofers. Boy was I way wrong. This sucker has enough gusto to shake the walls and blow your beanie off - to the point of insanity. Quite unbelievable for...

KLH's little power secret.

by l3it3r , Feb 20 '03
Pros: PRICE to sound ratio, good for small room or aparment/townhome
Cons: Not Pro-Quality
If you've run into any of my other reviews, they're all for higher-end equipment from Sony or Pioneer. But Sony's Subwoofers can't bark as loud for the same price as this little 120Watt wonder does. I was very sceptical when I saw the sale ad for it in...

This one's worth a lot more than the price

by aj99929 , Jul 16 '01
Pros: excellent sound, quality made, realistic price
Cons: loudness
I have all the home theater stuff, and I didn't worry about a subwoofer because I didn't think I needed it . I use a set of quality speakers, but they just didn't have the quality bass that I wanted. And I didn't want to spend much money on a new sub....

Dangerous defect - At least mine

by zuz1173 , Nov 04 '02
Pros: Great value & sound - while it lasted
Cons: After 1 1/2 years it melted itself. Could have started a fire.
I bought this subwoofer about a year and a half ago. For that time it worked great until just recently. The sound was clear with a bunch of power. The other night I noticed that the area near it smelled "hot." I immediately unplugged the unit and noticed...

I Finally Found a Great Sub at a Low Price!

by ewilliam , Feb 04 '03
Pros: Great sound, incredible value
Cons: None that I have seen [heard]
I had been searching long and hard for a subwoofer for my home stereo/AV Theater system. Given that my receiver didn't have a sub power amp, I needed a powered model. However, everywhere I looked, all I found were nice subwoofers at exhorbitant prices. I...

Great sub for under $100

by nehpets4627 , Feb 05 '02
Pros: Great sub at sub $100 price
Cons: Needs internal speaker stuffing
Anyone would be happy with this powered subwoofer, especially since it can be found at online auctions below $100 (i payed $80 for mine on ebay, including shipping). I have always liked KLH because they are made in the USA and have great products and...

beware!!!! this thing could torch
by dircpit ,Dec 17 '06
Pros: sounded good when it was working.nice bass.
Cons: i'm used to components lasting for many years, not just a couple.
i've had this sub about 3 years, and i recently noticed it wasn't working anymore. upon putting my hand on the cooling fins,i thought they were kind of hot.upon taking the unit apart,i found the circuit board badly scorched.after plugging it back in,a relay or something was getting very hot,and i could detect a burning smell.leads me to wonder if i hadn't discovered this ,if i'd have been out of a house due to a fire. cant believe a manufacturer could let this happen.

Decent Low Cost Sub
by mpompey0110 ,Nov 11 '05
Pros: Cheap, decent asthetics
Cons: Not a good performer for someone serious about home theatre.
Like the reviewer above, I too just lost my sub after about 6-7 year run. In the end, it suffered from Chronic Sub Hum and started to overheat. I smelled a circuit board going bad. Upon opening the unit two of the capacitors on the board had gone and leaked their insides all over the board.

While the sub worked it did a decent job from the 40 - 120 Hz range. EVen though the sub says its range is from 30 - 150 HZ it isn't. It's really handles itself best in the 40 - 70 Hz range. At higher freqs the bass tends to get boomy and not as tight, at lower freqs it simply can't hang below 30Hz well at all.

A good run, but...
by sonork64 ,Oct 13 '05
Pros: Bangs hard, rides semi long, cheap as hell
Cons: Circuit boards almost catch fire near the end, not fully balanced..go with a 12
I have just recently laid to rest the 2nd of my three beloved KLH's. The very first one I purchased at an electronics fair lasted only a few months. I then purchased another one from Best Buy and used my performance service plan to replace the first one. The recently deceased lasted a good 6-7 years and boomed all the way up until about 6 months ago when it started turning itself off under load. I suspected that the end was near and babied it as much as I could, but alas a consistent hum emanates from the unit now. Upon further investigation of the amp, a circuit board seems to have been cooking for a long time and finally gave way to short circuit. So basically: #1 sub died in 3 weeks by going silent, no autopsy performed - #2 sub was used for 2-3 years and was sold with longevity unverfiable - #3 sub rocked from 1999-2005 only to die from cronic sub hum. Make your decision to purchase with this 10 year review and decide if $120 every 3.33 years on average is o.k. for your sub allowance.

After a month the sound became intermittent. Then while playing a CD, it was noticable when it went from track to track. After looking at the pc boards, the soldiering was terrible. TOO MANY COLD SOLDERING JOINTS>

Easily handled a Base guitar...
by snook2222_dt3000 ,May 15 '02
Easily handled a Base guitar plugged straight into the amp, handles Classical music with stunning precision, and makes movies even more enjoyable and exciting wih thunderous roars and deafening crashes. The many connections on the back make it a very versitile machine. Best 150 i've ever spent.

I just picked this thing...
by samuknow_dt3000 ,Aug 30 '02
I just picked this thing up to go along with my new Sony DTS/Digital receiver. I have some pretty high end book shelf speakers and needed to fill in the low frequencies. I looked at the ASW10 100 and decided to go buy it. It was on sale at Bestbuy for 99.00. I found the ASW10 120 sitting there with no box. Got it for 89.00. WOW. Hooked it up and played a CD. Incredible. Then watched a movie or two. This thing shook the pictures on my walls. The impact from explosions was unbeleivable. I will recomend this Sub to my friends....
