Kenwood VR-505

Pros: Great price for a good receiver
Cons: Lack of S-video
I purchased the VR-505 at Sam's Club after shopping around for a surround receiver in the $150 range. I knew Kenwood was a good brand, so I got it. After unboxing the unit I proceeded to hook up my components. I did like that it had enough inputs to...

Pros: ton of features and great sound for the price
Cons: Needs way more a/v imputs and a S video output
I replaced a Denon avr 1200 with this unit because I wanted dolby 5.1. And Believe it or not this thing smokes the Denon in sound quality in digital mode (not apples to apples, I know since the Denon did not have a digital mode)Over all I was very...

Works well, sounds good.

Pros: Sounds good.
Cons: No bass or treble control.

I picked one of these up at a garage sale for $65. I hooked it up and it worked without any problems. I am by no means an audiophile, but it sounds fine to me.

The receiver is capable of understanding Dolby digital and DTS, and has a reasonable number of inputs, including fiber optic.

One annoyance is that there isn't any way of controlling bass and treble. According to the instructions, bass and treble can be controlled when in a particular mode (analog or PCM stereo), but from my experience it appears they cannot be controlled at all. The default settings seem reasonable, but I live in an apartment and it would be nice to be able to turn down the bass late at night.

I have read in other reviews elsewhere that the bass doesn't sound as good as some other recievers, since the audio is high-pass-filtered at 40hz instead of 20hz. This doesn't bother me, but it seems a good thing to be aware of.
