Great for video and multimedia but not spectacular for games.

by thechuunt , Nov 12 '02
Pros: Great for multimedia, video editing, and gaming.
Cons: Expensive, quality not superb, and not as good as Geforce 4 TI for games.
Introduction
The ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 8500DV is one of the newest video cards out in the market, (ATI just came out with the 9000 series). Unlike the 8500 which is geared more toward gamers and price conscience consumers this video card...

I love my 8500DV...almost

by donovandobkins , Feb 12 '02
Pros: Unbelievable specs and possibilities
Cons: The software is still a work in progress and the dongle is not available yet
The Radeon 8500DV is an unbelievable graphics card that does some incredible things. Once the bugs are worked out, it will be a showstopper.

The card includes FireWire ports, which would be great for integrating a digital camcorder or...

Ultimate Multimedia

by KarsinTheHutt Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jan 13 '02
Pros: Versatile hardware and multimedia software
Cons: ATI Drivers still not entirely mature
The Radeon 8500DV is a highly capable graphics card featuring ATI’s second generation Radeon chip (codenamed R200). In addition to providing fast gaming, the 8500DV features a host of multimedia enhancements, including FireWire ports, a TV Tuner, and a...

ATI 8500 DV = 8/10

by thebigblue92 , Feb 19 '02
Pros: Jack of all trades, masterful at all. Hardware very high quality. Software very satisfactory.
Cons: Sealed retail box did not come with ddr RAM. Coax requires tweaking for best results.
Jack of all trades and masterful at most. Hardware very high quality. Software is very satisfactory. I use it for gaming in favorites such as Men of Honor and Return to Wolfenstein and so far I am very pleased. I kno it won't benchmark as well as a...

Product Not Ready for Users

by worb99 , Sep 28 '02
Pros: DVD playback is great.
Cons: Drivers and software unstable, ATI support is non-responsive on issues.
The feature set of this product lead me away from the GeFORCE line. However, the feature set is not truely fulfilled due to poorly written software and drivers. Also, ATI support failed to respond twice to requests for help on a number of issues. The...

Good Card, but doesn't do it ALL

by dtseng1969 , Jan 17 '03
Pros: Good 3D gaming performance, Good software features, Best TV picture, Remote control
Cons: No multi-monitor support, Bad Win98se support, Replay TV didn't work for me
[update 18Mar2003: I've since bought an AIW9700pro and am happy with it, even though it doesn't have multi-monitor support. See my upcoming review of it elsewhere.]

I bought the AIW 8500DV from Best Buy for $200, but returned it two weeks...

Wonderful board, software needs work.

by aughey , Aug 27 '02
Pros: Wonderful recording quality. Excellent 3d capabilities
Cons: Software needs some work.
I actually use this board for my current work project. Our project will do digital video recording for a military application, so I don't use the supplied PVR software.

I have tried the included PVR software and it seems adequate, but not up...

Not a good solution for Firewire (1394) DV capture from a DV camcorder

by roozter , Feb 26 '03
Pros: Remote, and dongle for analog input and output, s-video, and audio.
Cons: Firewire DV port is useless. Documentation included and online is inconsistent with software.
I strongly recommend avoiding this card if you plan to capture DV (digital video) from your DV, or Micro DV camcorder with the 1394 Firewire or DV port connection. I installed this card and after having numerous problems with the drivers it was up and...

It Packs a Punch

by gibtde , Jun 26 '02
Pros: Quality Graphics, Good Support, Nice Price... For What It Does.
Cons: Need might void warrenty on some computers.
I have always been a fan of ATI since thouse are the cards that they put in my mac. Though when I switch over to pc, I decided to start off with building my own computer. This allowed me to pick the parts and gets a cheaper price, but that's beside the...

AIW Radeon 8500dv

by mikeshaffer , Feb 18 '02
Pros: Does everything
Cons: Driver support
I bought this card for $320 from mwave.com a month ago. The reason I got it is I needed a TV tuner and 3D card in one. To be honest, I haven't used most of the features this card comes with. I have used the TV capture program and the TV out. The TV...

Stay away

by lorrin , Feb 11 '03
Pros: Feature set rivals a TiVo
Cons: Too unreliable to be of use
I got the 8500DV because I thought it would be a better PVR solution than a TiVo. Why pay for listing service and why buy a dedicated hardware box that stores files in a proprietary format when I can just use an old computer?

First, the good...

Poor out of box experience...

by dhfan2 , Dec 23 '02
Pros: Well integrated pieces once difficult and cumbersome setup finished
Cons: cumbersome setup, support for Macrovision copy protection
This card was a big disappointment: I bought it to capture video tapes and copy to DVD's and found that it enforces copy protection and refused to capture video streams from my VCR. I just read that the Pinnacle PCTV solution work better in this...

Good, Solid Video Card

by bkedersha , Oct 23 '02
Pros: Excellent Graphics, this card does it all
Cons: Software Drivers are not there, Win XP downloads old drivers and software
I replaced my old Voodoo card with this beauty. I wanted to give my mom back her DVD player, and upgrade my video for those long hours of Unreal, Mechwarrior and flight sim gaming!

This card provides it all! Although, they have a newer...

Great card... with a catch.

by me_sheree , Jun 27 '02
Pros: All the fun things to play with!
Cons: It doesn't work in my system. =(
I love this card... It's wonderful and it has lots of things to play with. I've output to TV and made VCDs of TV shows, and the remote control is sooo cool! Unfortunately, I had to test the card out on an old motherboard, because it does NOT work with...

poor vhs capture!

by goobagoob , Jul 28 '02
Pros: lots of features
Cons: capture sucks!
This card has time base correction problems, which means that capturing degrades as if you were copying from vhs to vhs. It can be devastating to the picture quality, causing it to "tear", "jitter", "flag", color distortion, etc etc. From what I've...
