Pros: Excellent vocals, strong performances, interesting concepts, many hidden treasures (cameos, references). Cons: Seems contrived at times, direction not always clear.
The cover art on Across The Universe was terrible. Even after reading the synopsis of the film, I wasn't so sure about this one. It is definitely one of those films that borrows a little bit from various places and strings the elements ...
Pros: Yay! Something different! Cons: Okay, some parts are a little weird.
The hubby and I have eagerly been awaiting Across the Universe ever since seeing the first psychedelic trailer for it months ago. This film promised to be totally unique. It lives up to its promise and, while I would personally make a few ...
Pros: Evan Rachel Wood's left nipple, a couple of great renditions of classic Bealtle songs Cons: everything else
The Beatles music + great visuals + a touching love story = my favorite movie? Oddly, no. How can this seemingly perfect equation be so off? I love The Beatles, I love trippy and artsy visuals. I love 'love'. The only thing that is missing is the ...
Pros: Great Beatles music. Cons: Plot? We don't need no steenkin' plot.
Just what in the world was that? That was the reaction that I'm sure most people had after watching Across the Universe. The movie, a jukebox musical featuring Beatles songs, has been compared to Moulin Rouge (the 2001 musical one, not the ...
Pros: Decent renditions of Beatles songs. Pleasant enough lead actors and some nice cameos. Cons: Drab supporting cast. Plot. Just an excuse to sing Beatles songs and film arty imagery.
My wife and I are both firm fans of The Beatles so when trailers for Across the Universe began to appear we were somewhat intrigued. This looked rather lavish and from what we were shown on the trailer there were some pretty decent ...
Pros: Taymor's Direction, Production, Musical Montages, Dance Number, Look, Music, & Cast. Cons: Starts off Clunky & Weaknesses in Script.
Known for her spectacular work on Broadway, Julie Taymor is considered a great visionary for stage and film. In 1997, Taymor won huge success for her theatrical production of Disney's The Lion King that brought her many accolades. Then in ...
Pros: The music, the story, the acting, the times...everything. Cons: Are you insane?
Across the Universe (2007) Directed by Julie Taymor Music's the only thing that makes sense anymore, man. Play it loud enough, it keeps the demons away. JoJo. This movie is a story about Jude, a Liverpudilian who comes to ...
Pros: The film's music, apparently by some hacks called Lennon and McCartney; some exciting sequences Cons: Weak love story, even poorer attempt to capture the essence of an era; Silly characters
With ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, Julie Taymor has taken her considerable visionary chops, her flair for innovative story telling, her zest for the theatricality of moments, and chucked them out the window. What may have sounded good during brainstorming ...
Pros: a few numbers stand out, musically and visually Cons: incoherent plot, largely mediocre musical arrangements
From the first time I saw a preview for Across the Universe, I expected a lot. I love the Beatles’ music, and I kind of liked Moulin Rouge, and I saw this movie as essentially being a “mashup” of the two. How could it go wrong: Beatles ...
Pros: Joe Cocker's brief performance; a couple of nicely choreographed numbers Cons: One-note acting and singing; brain-dead adaptations of timeless Beatles songs
Call me overly reverent if you must. But the music of The Beatles means a great deal to several generations of listeners, and I am sad and angry to see it so thoroughly mangled in Across the Universe The movie's bald literalness and its ...
Pros: Songs; captures bit of US 1960's culture well; Bono and Eddie Izzard appearances Cons: Not the original as sung by originals; bit confusing re the psychedelic era; Prudence
I'm aware that a few people have found this film to be poor, some are on the fence, and a significant number enjoyed it greatly. It would be interesting if everyone in the media and on line gave their age, background and degree of affinity for the ...
Pros: Cool style, Entertaining music sequences, Interesting new take on an old genre Cons: Uneven, A bit messy, Very basic plot
I understand why it's getting bad reviews, but I don't neccessarily completely agree with them. Something about "Across the Universe" is oddly likeable. Whether it's the mostly amazing style, or the sparatic pacing of the film that kind of oddly works I ...
Pros: Great covers, visually awesome, likable actors. Cons: Thin plot, some characters needed more development.
Across the Universe is an enchanting collage of sequences set to the music of The Beatles. And don’t expect much else. I mean, there is a plot, but if you know as much as you do by now, you know it’s a simple, loose plot about boy meets girl, boy and ...
Pros: Some OK covers, interesting visual effects on occasion Cons: Non-existent plot, paper-thin characters, the horrific Beatles-related puns, and so on
I like campy things. Getting enjoyment out of clearly embarrassing things is a favorite pastime of mine. Some of my favorite guilty pleasures, both on television and film, are actually terrible, but I can still glean enjoyment from them. I do hate ...
Pros: Great direction, Nice performances, Moments (what there are) of character, Concept, Moments of plot Cons: Not much plot or character
Im not known for being a big fan of concept films, films that hinge on special effects, musicals or art films for the sake of being art films. I tend to enjoy things that make sense, have a balance between plot, character, and acting and are ...
Pros: Beatles songs, visuals Cons: Too long in the tooth
I'm a fan of the Beatles. I always have been and always will be. Not only are they one of the most influential acts on the history of rock n roll but they're just damn good. When it comes to their songs, you think of Help!, Let It Be, A Hard Day's Night, ...
Pros: Some of the musical scenes are truly ingenious.
Cons: At times Julie Taymor got just a little bit too weird for me
I had heard a lot about “Across the Universe” before I rented it, but really wasn’t sure what to expect. Nearly everyone I knew who had seen the film had a powerful reaction to it- either positive or negative. From what my friends and family told me, I ...
Pros: Very good movie. One of the best musicals I've seen. Cons: Because it's a musical, you have to pay attention to it.
The Plot: This is a musical. It has a musical's plot with a lot more depth. It's a taste of several young people's lives in the 60s and how they converge in New York. Because the film is so music heavy (more music than dialogue) you will have to pay ...
Pros: Music, visuals, actors, culture Cons: You really have to pay attention or you won't "get it"
You have to be a devout Beatles fan who has had their music as part of your soul, or a very deep soul that appreciates art, a directors vision, in love with musicals to watch this. It is fascinating, heart-stirring and bizarre all at the same time! I ...
Pros: Certainly tries for big things. A couple of the bits were fun. Cons: Silly, boring and butchers classic songs with feeble "reimaginings."
Where to start? There are so many things to dislike about this film, I hardly know how to start. It's a bad film, but not like BLOODRAYNE II or BENCHWARMERS is a bad movie. It's been made by committed, creative people who somehow missed actually stepping ...
Imagine if you can the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge on drugs! Think about this for a minute, yeah I know what you're thinking; Across The Universe however is so annoying, demented, and irritating it makes Moulin Rouge look like a serious classic piece of ...
Directed by Julie Taymor; written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, Director of photography, Bruno Delbonnel; edited by Françoise Bonnot Music score by Elliot Goldenthal, with songs by the Beatles Production designer, Mark Friedberg; Choreography ...
Pros: A great musical adventure for Beatles fans of all ages! Cons: Mature subject matter, (sex, drugs, language) some cheesy scenes.
I have to admit that I have not actually seen the DVD of this film, only the theatrical release, so I cant speak to any bonus features that may be available. This is only a review of the film itself. One important disclaimer for parents: This ...
Pros: The phenomenal actors, awesome soundtrack, and exquisite art direction Cons: weird film, especially the scene with the circus and the women falling into the water.
When Across the Universe hit theaters, all my friends told me I had to see it because it was (in their minds) one of the greatest films ever made. Of course, I set out to see it wondering if they were right. Going into it, I wasn't sure what to expect, ...
Pros: Amazing cast, awesome cameo's, wonderful music, one word BRILLIANT!!! Cons: Singing along in a movie theater is not aloud
Plot This movie follows the main character Jude (Jim Sturgess) from Liverpool, England to the 1960s United States antiwar Vietnam Era in a search of his father. While looking for his father he becomes friends with Max (Joe Anderson), and meets ...
Pros: Good music, simple comfortable love story, a likable charm that isn't easy to describe. Cons: Redundant musical scenes in places, Not enough representation for the artistic image of the film
I myself enjoyed this film, for what it was I enjoyed it. However, going into this film, after viewing the semi-psychedelic trailers, I was anticipating a film that was more about artistic expression and anti-war politics during the turbulent time of the ...
Pros: Eye Opening!!! Cons: May need to be in an altered state of mind to fully appreciate...
Across the Universe is set in the 60's. The soundtrack to this movie is made up entirely of all Beatles songs. Which my boyfriend and I felt were very well picked, complimenting the movie in various ways. This Movie I believe has a love/hate effect on ...
Pros: Great Beatle film for Beatles fans with Beatles characters. Cons: Very strange film. If you don't like "art films" don't watch this film.
At a time when true creativity is not much there, Julie Taymor comes out with a movie such as this. It's a musical, but not a traditional film musical. Your traditional film musical is based on a Broadway musical but this is the only musical I've seen ...
Pros: Music from The Beatles
A+ acting
The best "unique" film I have seen in ages. Cons: Honestly, nothing about this film projected a negative feeling.
Wow was I surprised at how much I loved this film. Being just 21 I am obviously too young to have been around for The Beatles and the Vietnam conflict but I found this movie, based on both, to be outstanding. (If you haven't seen the trailer, this is a ...
Pros: Beautiful music and somewhat good acting, very different. Cons: Not much character development or plot development.
Being a die hard fan of the Beatles since I was a young one, I had been waiting for this films release for a few months with apprehension. I would have to say I got a bit too excited, and maybe because I had anticipated it so much I made it a less ...
Pros: Great music from the BeatlesDramatic RomanceFun MusicalPsychedelic Scenes Cons: Drug contentViolenceInappropriate languageSexual contentNudity
Across the Universe
The Beatles’ greatest hits, a passionate romance, and psychedelic scenery sounds like the making of a great musical in 2007. Across the Universe has become ...
Pros: Another great tribute to the Beatles Cons: it may take more than one viewing to really appreciate it
I originally heard about this movie from my mother, who found out about it on an episode of Oprah. She said she thought this was something my fiancee and I would be interested in. She was right, I was curious since the beginning. The only problem was ...
Pros: -Great cast
-Great visual effects Cons: -A bit long
-Hard to follow if your not watching it closely
When I was forced to watch this movie, I thought it would be the longest two hours of my life. Little did I know I would soon buy this movie and watch it on multiple occasions. Across the Universe is a film that takes place in the 1960s right in the ...
Pros: Wonderful music and good flowing story. Fun movie. Cons: None!
Before watching Across the Universe, I found myself with one major concern: since this is a musical whose soundtrack was limited to the works of one band (not that the Beatles repertoire is a small library to choose from), the events could easily seem ...
Pros: Powerful story, great singing, neat story Cons: Beginning music seems a bit forced
Very, very cool movie. I'm a big Beatles fan, a fan of their message, a fan of their sound, and fan of their progress, their evolvement through some of the hardest times, and the timelessness of their sounds. Plot During the ...
Pros: Musical love story; one of a kind. Great music. Cons: Has some drug content and violence.
I wanted to see this movie from the first time I saw the previews on tv. After I saw the movie I knew it was going to be a classic. It kept my attention from beginning to end; with psychedelic scenes to famous lyrics from The Beatles. This movie was ...
Pros: Great music, good singing, and acting Cons: Very weak, thrown together story.
Being a huge Beatles fan for many many many years, I was super excited to see this new movie featuring many of this legendary bands songs. Unfortuantly, for me this movie seemed to fall flat in many aspects. I think the reason we sit down and spend two ...
Pros: Great new versions of classic Beatles songs. Cons: You'll waste about 2 hours of your life trying to figure out what you're watching.
My husband and I rented this over the weekend with high expectations. We both love The Beatles and felt that this might be THE movie that we would love more than Moulin Rouge!, which is our number one favorite. Please keep in mind, we went into this ...
Good movie for Beatles' fans by lailafc316 ,Nov 16 '07
Pros: Very original and excellent singing. Cons: It's very long and is slow at some parts. Probably not appropriate for children.
The first time I saw the trailer for this movie, I instantly knew I would fall in love with it. The whole movie was exciting, and the love story was rather different than other movies. The movie was very original, different than the crappy repeated movie plots that have been used in movies. There were certain parts of the movie that were rather odd, for instance when they were in the circus. The Beatles' songs fit into the story perfectly, and the characters are each unique. The singing is phenomenal. This movie is perfect for Beatles fans, or those who just love musical-type movies.
Pros: Everything, cinematography, the acting, the singing, the humor... Cons: closed minded people need not apply.
My boyfriend was dragged along to go see this movie. He hates musicals so I was a little nervous to even tell him that it was one. I told him I had a feeling that he was going to like it though.
I was right.
We both fell in love. And... if you rent it or buy it, make sure you watch the special features. Another cool thing to do is to look up on wikipedia all the ways that Julie Taymor tied in references to the Beatles. It goes much further than just singing their music.
This movie was truly amazing and I hope everyone that watches it goes in with an open mind, sits back, and enjoys. :)
Pros: Wonderful story-Great music Cons: Missing spanish subtitles!!!!
Love the movie/story but it lacks spanish translation though it says it has it. Subtitles only appear when there are spoken lines between characters and may be the first verses of the songs... Thus, most of the songs are missed for non english speakers. The beauty of this movie remains on the lyrics!
Mostly everyone knows the lyrics of several songs from The Beatles, but this movie also happens to bring songs that are not so well known, and that was what I expected to promote...
I only tried subtitles for spanish, don't know how it works with other languages.
