Pros: Broad, goes back farther than most, shows development, adult-level reading Cons: Does not delve into anything deeply--it would have to be a 30-volume encyclopedia!
Gets revised frequently to bring the last, modern chapter up to date. Starts in the days of the Green Sahara, and covers the major outlines of African development as well as that of many specific tribes and civilizations. Written for the general audience or undergraduate. Superb introduction to the continent as a whole because it does not judge development by the old European standards.
