Pros: scenery. cinematography. Jules Verne's story Cons: acting, cameos of people you won't recognize if you're under 40
I have to laugh at the tepid gossip that comes out of Hollywood these days. Whether its the fact that somebody was/was not wearing panties with a short dress, or that someone is in/out of rehab or ....pretty uninspiring. In days gone by in Hollywood we ...

On a warm spring evening in 1958, my father treated my mother, sister, brother and myself to a screening of Mike Todd's Around the World in 80 Days. This was quite an event for several reasons: first of all, my father rarely went to the movies ...
Pros: David Niven, music, charm... Cons: So what was Shirley MacLaine doing in this?

I saw this movie only because it won Best Picture. Whenever you see a movie for that kind of reason, it raises your expectations, and raises the risk of the movie falling short. This movie would have done that no matter what expectations I had.

Pros: It is an undoubted Classic and must rank among the best films of all time. Cons: There can be no cons in a movie of this caliber.
An absolutely Beautiful and absorbing story by Jules Verne about a stuffy Englishman who makes a wager that he can get around the world in 80 days, which in that time was considered impossible.
Wonderfully played by Sir David Niven and complemented by most of the leading actors of the day, who keep popping up throughout the film, it is far better than the recent pathetic re-make.
Many of the scenes can never be duplicated as the ships, and royal barges etc, are no longer around. The music is unforgettable once heard and the story line stays with Verne and doesn't take off in ridiculous tangents like the remake.
The greatest actors of the day, bull fighting, ballooning across the mountains, in a bar fight in 1880's San Francisco, by rail across the west, the boat being burned out from under them, by Elephant through the darkest jungles of India, rescuing a fair maiden from a horrible death, etc, etc. Wonderful!!
