The small rubber nubs on bottom of computer compress the foam allowing the entire bottom of the laptop to have contact. I realized this after noticing my fan running at a very high speed. but I wasn't doing anything that put a heavy load on the processor (just surfin'). When I leave my laptop on it for any length of time with the top closed but powered on, the touch pad is quite hot and the fan sounds like a jet engine.
