I love the Black & Decker PHV1800. I use it to pick up kitty litter, bits of food and catfood, many little jobs. It's always ready when I want it, easy to use, powerful and reliable. I have purchased additional filters -  they don't need to be changed too frequently. I find it easy to clean up after.

I have owned this for over a year and I use it several times a week. It is durable and I expect to have it for a long time.

Pros: Very powerful, easy to empty and keep clean. 
Cons: Loud, but this didn't bother us. 

I bought this vacuum to have something on hand to clean up small messes such as dustballs, cat hair, crumbs, etc.  It is very powerful and definitely gets the job done.  Works well in the car, for cobwebs, spiders and much more.  

I only use it for short bursts at a time.   Does clog a bit easily and you will want to avoid large objects that can clog it. Battery power is supposed to be short, but I have never had it die on me. 

Pros: powerful, easy to empty, charges well and fits on base nicely.
Cons: smallish container but ok for small jobs. A little heavy for seniors for everyday.

Have owned ours for about 18 months and the motor died. But, while it was working it was good as far as the suction goes. However, it's quite a loud little machine! Kids ran out of the room whenever they saw me pull out the vacuum. Don't have an experience with other handhelds, but this vacuum is by far louder than my regular vacuum. Just an odd detail that's really bugged me about it - and is really difficult to know before you buy it.
