Pros: Stirring football scenes; a late coming-of-age tale Cons: derivative of Friday night Lights - but maybe it was supposed to be?
I'm a native Hoosier. That means that if you were to scrutinize my blood under a microscope, even after twenty-five years outside the state you'd probably find a sprinkling of oversized, perfectly spherical corpuscles. They'd be an oddball orangey-brown ...
Pros: It's not $19.50 at Costco Cons: It's short and retails for $19.50. No suspense or drama.
Being a huge John Grisham fan, I have had the release of Bleachers marked on my calendar for about a month. It was a friend who surprised me with the news that John Grisham was coming out with a Fall Novel. I anxiously await the February release o ...
Pros: Teaches "life's little lessons" in novel form. Cons: None, although not a traditional Grisham book, one of his bests.
Bleachers, a novel by John Gresham, is unlike any of his novels Ive read. I have read most of them. In general his early novels such as The Firm, The Runaway Jury and The Street Lawyer have been my favorites. Obviously I enjoy the mix of his ...
Pros: Quick development of characters, realistic football lingo Cons: Perhaps too many characters, purpose is in question, too brief
When John Grisham wrote the novel A Painted House and departed from his normal format of “lawyer books,” I thought he was taking a big risk of being railed upon by the critics. Yet I found it an engaging story. I felt the same way as I read Sk ...
Pros: Grisham plays on the emotions of yesteryear beautifully... Cons: Not enough - wanted more...
Confession #1 - I've never read a John Grisham book before. I have seen a couple of movies based on his books though :). Confession #2 - I'm not a big football fan. I'm from Indiana. We're basketball fans here :). Despite those two things, ...
Pros: Much, much deeper than merely reminiscing about fleeting fame in high school sports! Cons: May lose some readers not familiar with the rules of North American football!
If you’re looking for a legal thriller, “Bleachers”, neither legal nor thriller, is certainly not the drink for which you thirst! In a quiet, pastoral yet moving style of writing which he was to re-use to incredible effect in “The Last Juror” ...
Pros: Athletes will remember their own glory days. Cons: Subplots were not developed. Support characters were glossed over.
John Grisham again leaves the legal drama behind with BLEACHERS and instead focuses on the high school football field and all that goes with a successful football program. The main character, Neely Crenshaw, is a former Messina Spartan who became an ...
Pros: If you like football, you will like this. short read, entertaining. Cons: Had potential for a lot more depth, but it fell short.
I was looking for a nice short story read and saw Bleachers as my local used book store. It looked small enough for me and I like John Grisham, the author so I bought it and brought it home to read. Bleachers is a book where John Grisham leaves his ...
Pros: Only spent 6.99 on the book and it was short. Cons: Not my style of book.
Was John Grisham kidnapped by aliens and replaced with somebody else? Was this book actually supposed to be in the Oprah Winfrey book section? (No offense intended toward Oprah Winfrey.) These were my questions after reading the first few pages of ...
Pros: Easy read. Not too complicated. Realistic characters. Feels good. Cons: Only in hardback. Not cheap. Paid $15 at Barnes & Noble.
I'm neither a John Grisham loyalist, or naysayer. This book was recommended to me by a close friend. I needed a book to read while traveling, so I picked this up to fill the airport waiting time. I read this book in about four hours. For any book ...
Pros: the most interesting character is coach eddie rake, who we never get to meet Cons: stock characters, no plot, no reason to read it
There’s a commonly known formula, or at least it’s commonly known to me, that lies in almost every John Grisham novel. Either the government, nationally feared law firm, or conglomerate of a company is doing something wrong, usually doing it ...

A Simple Story about High School Football by maddyjones1 ,Oct 07 '03
Pros: Well written story about High School Football Glory Days and Not so Glory Days Cons: None if you're a true Grisham fan
Can this guy write or what? In the spirit of Painted House, Grisham does it again. No, it's not a legal thriller or blockbuster to be next movie, but it's good grass roots fiction. Football fan or not, you have to enjoy how Grisham can take the ordinary and make it readable entertainment. If it's page turning excitement you're after, you may be disheartened, but for those amused by Grisham's ability to color outside the lawyer lines, give this one a try
John Grisham's leap from law to sports and scores big! by mguy77 ,Apr 07 '04
Pros: This book is fast paced & very enjoyable to read & leaves you wanting more! Cons: Not worth the high price, get from the library since it is under 200 pages.
John Grisham's sports novel "Bleachers" revolves around an ex-quarterback named Neely Crenshaw. His inner demons from his past catch up with him when he returns to his hometown. Great for reading in a waiting room/airport by amfrank ,Jan 19 '04
Pros: Very fast and easy read. Cons: At $15,it's pricey for such a short book.
The book is short, especially compared to other Grisham (law) books at just 163 pages. However like all Grisham stories he does develop characters who are flawed and easy to root for. While the story was somewhat predictible, I liked not knowing what really happened at half time. . . As in most Grisham books the female characters are also minor, though this again has a nice twist.
It is very easy reading. I finished it in about 3 hours also. The story moves quickly and I found myself anxious to see if there were more twists.
The departure from law into sports was interesting for this Grisham fan; I did like it far more than Painted House.
High school all-American Neely Crenshaw was probably the best quarterback ever to play for the legendary Messina Spartans. Fifteen years have gone by ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
