If the air was blue, it's clear now

by prapresident , Dec 15 '02
Pros: Silent, easy maintenance, effective
Cons: Price, filter price, weight
Ok that's all well and good, but DOES IT CLEAN THE AIR?
Those of you that know me are aware that I'm pretty much a bottom-line guy. I once read that the greatest philosophy a salesman can have is to, "Sell the sizzle, not the steak."...

Blueair 501 Air Purifier Alleviates My Allergies

by bigskeptic Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Feb 28 '05
Pros: Quiet; Easy maintenance; Replace filters only 2x a year
Cons: Expensive
Two years ago, I decided to research room air purifiers to put in our sub-basement. This is our laundry room, where our dogs ate and also where my husband worked out. Because there’s no heating down there, the door is mostly kept shut. So there’s no ...

Blueair experiment worked

by pkwan88 , Jun 18 '06
Pros: High quality, low noise, and works.
Cons: Big in size and filters can be expensive.
I live in northern California and this year (2006) we got a lot of rain which made the allergy season pretty bad. Tired of waking up sneezing and having itchy watery eyes on most mornings, I started the search for an air purifier. I checked out a lot ...

A great big overpriced disappointment

by dan_frazier , Oct 01 '03
Pros: Cleans air, sort of. Looks kind of cool. Pretty quiet on the lower settings.
Cons: Expensive to buy. Expensive to operate. Noisy at highest setting. Difficult to clean.
This air filter is advertised as silent, or nearly so. Well, yeah, at the lower settings it is pretty quiet. But what they don't tell you is that at the highest setting, it is anything but quiet. It is as loud as my vent fan above my oven, and that's pret ...

Loved it, now it's a stink machine

by baver , Oct 04 '04
Pros: Once a great purifier. Product not made in Third World Nation.
Cons: Now produces nothing but a foul odor with NEW filters.
I purchased the BlueAir 501 about 2 yrs. ago for a small master bedroom.I have 2 cats, which don't shed much, but I do have allergies. The BlueAir 501 seemed to do an excellent job of purifying the air.I use it 24 hrs. a day on the second highest ...

Buyer Beware

by singercos , Sep 18 '07
Pros: I was not able to detect any pros.
Cons: The product is hardly worth the money.
My experience with Blueair, (a Medwing company), has been terrible. First off, I didn't notice one change after running the system for two days straight at full blast. Actually, I take that back. I noticed two things: 1) the room smelled exactly the ...

The best air purifier I've ever used!
by ppale2005 ,Oct 26 '05
Pros: Quiet, Nice looking design and...it works!
Cons: a little pricey, but if you suffer like I do it's worth the money
I have suffered from allergies in my home for years now and have tried every air purifier out there! My daughter just bought me the Blueair model 501 air purifier for my birthday. I was skeptical since no other air purifier has done me a bit of good, but just a few days after plugging it in I noticed a difference. The air seemed fresher. I wasn't sneezing all the time, my eyes weren't burning, I actually felt at home in my own home for the first time since I moved in.

Thank you Blueair! For anyone reading the bad reviews on this product, pay no attention to them. This air purifier actually works!

1 yr of use - intolerable squeaking noise
by williamlawson ,Apr 05 '08
Pros: Looks nice, great while it lasts
Cons: Unbearable squeaking after one year, no way to fix
At first I thought this air purifier was great - it cleans the air well, is not *too* noisy (anything that moves air is going to make noise after all) and looked really smart.

However, after a year of use the fan on mine squeaks like crazy and basically makes it impossible to sleep while on, even on the lowest setting. What's more, they've constructed this so that it's virtually impossible to take apart and get at the fan, since it's all enclosed in a cage with those weird looking screws that none of your screwdrivers fit - and even if they did, it still isn't apparent that you'd manage to get in there. I tried directing silicon spray at the fan from behind the cage with no luck at all.

I did contact Blueair about this problem by email - as I expected, they didn't reply at all even to acknowledge receipt of my problem. Which suggests to me that they don't have an answer.

All of this means that I certainly wouldn't buy a new one, and I'm now looking into a Friedrich.

Very Satisfied
by standswithfork ,Mar 06 '06
Pros: Great design. Quiet. Dependable. Easy to clean.
Cons: Filters cost about $50 and need to be changed every six months.
I've owned my Blue Air for almost 4 years now and I can't say enough good things about it.

While the filters are a little pricey, they do a great job of removing particulates. I think it is one of the top three air-cleaners for removing dust, mold, etc. Other than filter cost, the operation costs are low as it has a great warranty (10 year)and is a very efficient. I never noticed a spike in my electric bill and my unit is ALWAYS on (usually on the medium and high setting). I think this more than makes up for the slightly higher filters. But do the math for yourself.

I did notice that some of the other reviews mentioned that the unit is difficult to clean. I found this not to be the case for me but I have a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment that makes an easy job of it. Maybe the other reviewers are cleaning it by hand?

Blueair 501
by oscarlewin ,Oct 03 '07
Pros: Does exactly what it claims, with a quality build and design. Very quiet fan.
Cons: None really. Perhaps a remote control and filter replacement light would be useful.
I suffer with chronic bronchitis and asthma.
I have put the Blueair 501 in our bedroom and have experienced a big improvement in air quality and a marked reduction in my symptoms.

The unit runs very quietly and although a little on the large side, is nicely built with a high quality steel casing.

Filters will cost about $50 every 12 months or so with normal use which is not too bad for a quality product.

I have bought the 402 model for my grandson, who suffers with allergies.

Not That Great
by malkuth ,Jun 10 '07
Pros: None
Cons: Many, listed above
I don't know what experience others have with air purifiers
but I have purchased more that 15 brands over the years.
The blueair (601) has a blow-by problem (not sealed) is not true hepa, and is very expensive in filter replacement costs. I think there are better units for the money. Iq air or Tracs. I have no affiliation with any air purifier companys, just an allergy sufferer looking for the truth instead of marketing.

Great product, misleading image
by drschnitz ,Sep 27 '03
Pros: Silent, sturdy, effective, pretty good looking.
Cons: Does not look like its ad pictures.
It cleans the air well, and at the lower level it is very, very quiet, a great improvement on everything else. However, I expected that the outside of the machine would be stainless steel because every picture I have ever seen of it looks that way - including the one on the owner's manual. Nope, it's only made it white. It's ok looking, but not the high tech look expected. All the web images are provided by Blueair so they real should do something aqbout this. I made a fool of myself to Blueair.com by refusing to believe that there was no stainless steel. When I found out the truth, I had to go back and apologize.

Very nice unit
by aussie20735 ,Aug 07 '08
Pros: Price is reasonable for the rating ease of filter changes
Cons: None
I have only had the air cleaner for a short time but love it so far.
I got my brand new 501 in the unopened box on e-bay for $319.00 and free shipping and it came with 3 extra filters. The filters are very easy to change and you can get them at a reduced cost on e-bay also. The top rated aircleaner is the IQAIR health pro plus at a rating of 5 but costs $800.00. The Blueair is rated at 4 1/2 and cost much less then the IQAIR. I have 4 dogs which causes a lot of pet dander on the furniture. I have this in my family room and most likly will get one for my basement soon.

BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!
by zbs60 ,Sep 26 '04
Pros: NONE
Cons: Maintenance fees will suck you dry.
The first unit I received came with a broken light and had to be sent back for exchange. The model with "smokestop filters" puts out an annoying odor. The cost to replace the filters in this unit is around 300 dollars a year!!! At lower speeds this unit put out a low level oscillating sound which is aggravating. Dont believe the stuff you read about this unit. I did and I regret buying this piece of sh*&
