Pros: A wonderfully written book with excellent characters. Cons: strong and not so cheery subject matter
Nicholas Sparks has become one of my favorite authors, simply because his stories seem so real. They arent that hot and heavy romance, but actually stories that some might be able to relate to in real life. Dear John was such a book. ...
Pros: Beautifully written with strong themes Cons: Don't read if you're looking for cheery entertainment
There are some books that draw their magic solely from the alchemy of words. The author takes those everyday metals of the English language, melts them together, and then subjects them to a purifying fire. Nicholas Sparks in Dear John proves ...
Pros: It leaves you in tears Cons: It leaves you in tears
Nicholas Sparks fans beware, this is one of the authors finest. Ive read Sparks before. The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, A Bend in the Road. He has a flair for real life mingled together with romance. His books have always ...
Pros: the typeface in the book Cons: contrived, predictable, no empathy for characters
At the risk of sounding sexist, this is a “chick” book in being a tear jerker about unrequited love, Dear John letters, and love gone astray, along with September 11, 2001 thrown in. Even though I am a middle aged man, I do have a romantic ...
Pros: modern day love story Cons: slow reading - typical dear john letter
I didn't think this was one of his best books. It was slow reading at first and I had a hard time staying focused. Usually I have a hard time putting down his books but with this one I had a hard time getting through it. The story was okay but ...
Pros: modern time love story Cons: slow reading at first
Nicholas Sparks newest book Dear John is an good read. It actually is set in recent times. Right around the 911 incident. The book is divided in three parts. It takes you back into the past life of a man and a woman and how they met and fell in love ...
Pros: Nice love story and descriptive details. Cons: Very predictable, same old love story.
I picked up and started reading Dear John only because I had grown up in Wilmington, North Carolina, which is where the novel takes place. I enjoyed reading about all the places which I had missed so much, the restaurants I missed eating the great ...
Pros: great story, it's different from his other books Cons: I want more; I hope there's a sequel. : )
I've read every single novel that Nicholas Sparks has written and have loved almost all of them. "Dear John" is one of my new favorites. I absolutely loved it!
The thing I most liked about this one is the "different" aspect it has. I've never read a book about a marine who falls in love or a book that tells of their struggles when they're away from their loved ones. So I really enjoyed this aspect of the book. This book is unlike any other book Sparks has written, or rather, it deals with different parts of life and different people. I highly recommend it.
Pros: hmmm... give me a minute... uh... Cons: Character complexity of a 'Dick and Jane' book
Many people may disagree with me, but these characters are WAY too perfect and mainstream to be remotely interesting, especially Savannah. Is there a more "perfect" human being on this earth? She is beautiful, smart, compassionate, loving to her parents, understanding of all mankind that is different from her, analytical, christian, and has NO bad habits or vices. Good grief. The book hovers around the marine's unwavering love for this "masterpiece" of a woman (who would bore me to tears). Nothing about her is magnetic (in my opinion) so it made getting through this book a torture. I'm surprised Nicholas Sparks would create such a non-complex character. She literally ruined the story for me. It's hard to connect with characters that have no real "imperfect" traits.
Overall, a predictable book with ho-hum characters that need to spice up their lives a little. It was a drag to read. Normally I love Nicholas Sparks' books, this one was a total flop.
Nicholas - Please spice up your characters a little bit!!
Great book not in love with the ending by ames02270731 ,Dec 28 '06
Pros: great beginning Cons: the last 5 chapters
I have read all of Nicholas Sparks books and I can honestly say I was not happy with this one. I loved how it started out with the summer romance, the letters, phone calls, and stuff like that. I hated the actual Dear John letter, I understand that she had to do what she had to do but Tim come on he was and never will be the one for her.
I have never known a person to just give up all of his fortune to help someone else out. Tim gave her back to him but he gave up his entire fortune for Tim to live. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT no one is that self-serving.
Pros: The Plot. The details which added to the story of the book. Cons: ---
I loved this book! I haven't read the books that made Nicholas Sparks famous such as The Notebook or A Walk to Remember. I have only read about 5 of his books and out of the ones I have read this one is my favorite! It's very heartwarming in the beginning when John and Savannah fall in love. It's heart wrenching towards the end. The ending didn't have John and Savannah riding off into the sunset together but it was refreshing to not have a "disney" type ending. I believe the ending added to the character of the book and left you thinking about what the book was actually about, which i believe is about true love and a simple choice can change your life forever. The only problem I had with it was Savannah's character. She seemed a little too perfect. Although I loved John's character. He was perfect but still had some rough edges. All in all it was a good book, definetley worthwhile reading.
One of Spark's better books! by laurensmom2003 ,Mar 12 '09
Pros: Easy Read! East to follow! Didn't jump around too much! Cons: I wish he had elaborated more is some parts and less in others.
I read this book in anticipation for the movie of it coming out Spring/Summer 2009.
I thought it was one of Spark's better books. Most people I believe could relate to this book in someway or another. It was a very touching book but an easy read. I don't want to elaborate too much so that I spoil the book!
A great book for a quite snowy weekend!
Grab a box of tissues! You are going to need them.
This is what true love is all about by j_ritzie ,Jul 06 '07
Pros: inspires you to want to be a better person, mate, etc.... Cons: sad ending, didn't leave me feeling good
This is the best story I've ever read by ANY author! I thought the characters were dynamic and Savannah's character really made me want to emulate her. The way he wrote the dialog for their arguments/feelings/love seemed very realistic to me. This is a perfect summer read, I highly recommend you run out and get this one. I've read it twice myself.
Pros: An all out great love story! Cons: It had to end..
This book, to me, showed what a great writer Nicholas Sparks is. It sometimes feels like he's actually a woman writing all this. It's amazing the way he can make you feel the way the character in the book is feeling.
I truly enjoyed this book. It's a different point of view from other books I've read. This one is about a marine who wants something so bad and is broken up that he can't have it. You don't normally think of marines as being this way, but they have feelings, too, and I loved the way he made this story so true about love. That no matter who the person you love is with, you just want them happy.
I loved the ending. Not really the part about giving up his money for Tim, but just that he did it out of love. He still loved her though and that just seemed to make everything right.
