Pros: It teaches tolerance, acceptance, and unconditional love… great illustrations. Cons: The story is too short... long enough to keep kids attention.
As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, I feel books like "My name is NOT Monkey Girl is vital. This book not only tells a story, but it is also about awareness. It teaches children to accept those who are different.
I purchased My Name is Not Monkey Girl when it first came out because I was so impressed with Candace and Miriam's story. and was very impressed with this book. I absolutely LOVE everything about this book, from the storyline to the illustrations to the author and main character themselves. I shared it with my family and friends as well as all of my children's teachers and the school counselor. Everyone whom I have shared it with has been equally impressed with this books quality and the way that it helps you to see life through the eyes of a child! It truly makes you see that even though someone may look different they are the same inside. I would definitely purchase this book for any other children, grandchildren, or anyone special in your life. It is a DEFINITE MUST HAVE!!!!!!

Pros: Informative, creative, educating, inspiring Cons: Expected a hard cover
"My Name is Not Monkey Girl" is a refreshing, thought-provoking and in most cases, a life-altering read. It's a highly engaging story. Be prepared for a journey with a high-spirited, 8-year-old girl and discover life, as she knows it - living each day with Giant Congenital Nevus, a rare skin disorder. The disorder often leads adults and children to stare and gasp. Nevertheless, Candace is able to laugh, play, learn, and be an agent for change.
"My Name is Not Monkey Girl" serves as tremendous resource for parents, teachers, and schools. It was written essentially to educate. The title for the book was inspired after a child called Candace 'monkey girl.' At the time, Candace was approaching her to play.
Candace has had nine facial surgeries to remove the Nevus. She is scheduled for additional facial reconstruction surgeries to restore her face to proper proportion.
Her story invokes a challenge to her reader to respect differences among the human race. You'll re-discover simple truths as she positively influences others.
"My Name Is Not Monkey Girl" not only educates the misinformed, it also serves as a vessel that can be used to reconnect to the overlooked emotion of compassion.
