Pass On This Kettle, Unless You're Patient...

by annecal Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Mar 22 '07
Pros: Great looks, works well
Cons: BAD taste/smell to the water
I needed to replace my Russel Hobbs kettle and after looking around a bit, I decided on this one. I have several Breville items and have been happy with them. This one has been something of a mixed bag, though, and here is why. The Look The ...

Given the competition, not bad

by huangj , Feb 05 '08
Pros: Easy to use, good build quality
Cons: Not the fastest boiler and pricey
I picked up this water heater from bed bath and beyond (with the mailed 20% off coupon). It is the most attractive of the available offerings, but also the most expensive. I first looked into getting one of these after I used my friend's Braun ...

Finally a GREAT kettle

by keetle1 , Mar 13 '08
Pros: gorgeous, works perfectly, packaged with a conscience. Yes~!
Cons: Not a one.
I have struggled with kettle burnouts and flaws for years. Finally I have found a kettle I am happy with in every way. This kettle adds aesthetically to my kitchen, with it's quality construction and materials and pleasing light blue incidental ...

Excellent and Functional design

by jhilty , May 14 '08
Pros: Beautiful, simple and fully-functional design Heats quickly and lets you know it's ready
Cons: No problems at all
I purchased TWO different electric kettles and the Bodum performed well in quickly heating, but every time the lid is opened, water that has condensed on the inside of the lid drips on the countertop - a BIG problem in an office setting and a nuisance at ...

Very well built kettle

by jonnybravo , Feb 02 '08
Pros: Very well built.
Cons: Water level meter hard to read... its behind the handle
My partner and I got tired of heating water for tea on the stove since we heat at least 2 gal per day! I decided to get it for Christmas. It looks great and best of all performs just the way it should. It is very sturdy and solidly built. There is ...

It looks nice, but...

by mangotango1 , Mar 30 '07
Pros: Very sleek look
Cons: Takes a long time to boil water
I actually bought this cordless electric kettle by Breville after a salesman at Crate and Barrel convinced me that it is the "Cadillac" of all electric kettles. While I do like this for many reasons, I do have a few gripes with it and so do not actually ...

Breville SK500XL IT HAS ISSUES!

by guildwood , Sep 28 '09
Pros: Well made ( except that cordless feature is a poor design). Quick to boil water.
Cons: Cordless feature did not hold up to daily use.
I purchased this kettle about 2 years ago from a department store for about $80.00 Canadian. It lasted about 18 months. I chose it over others because of its functionality, that it was stainless as apposed to my previous plastic kettle and the fact ...

Otherwise fair, but I got burned--literally!

by mchargue , Feb 04 '08
Pros: Looks. Tall (small counter footprint). Good balance.
Cons: You can easily burn your fingers with normal use. Inefficient (not insulated).
Replaced our old kettle (it finally bit the dust) with this one. Overall it seems nice, though I agree about the poor visibility of the water level gage. Now, how was I burned(?). The handle invites your thumb and/or forefinger to touch the outside of ...

Nice looking but keep kids at a safe distance!

by alessandro-mos , Apr 16 '09
Pros: Sleek design, nice metal finish, solid feel. Looks expensive. Classy.
Cons: No insulation for the outside, so it gets scalding hot.
We moved back home to the US after an extended stay abroad and wanted to replace our trusty Krupps electric kettle. Unfortunately, the only nice-looking brand offered at the mall in our new home town was the Breville, and the top of the line seemed to be ...

Look no further!

by csenor , Mar 05 '08
Pros: Heats water fast, is easy to fill, turns off if empty and has separate base.
Cons: Absolutely none.
I am obsessive about researching things before I buy them. I researched plenty before buying this Breville electric kettle. I have had it at least 6 months now, and it gets used several times a day, and night. We drink a lot of tea. This kettle heats ...

Now this is a sweet kitchen tool! Pure class act.
by df07 ,Jan 30 '07
Pros: Heats great, looks great, water tastes great.
Cons: None
I recently purchased this cordless electric kettle and love it. It not only looks and feels like a very high quality product, but it performs well too. After owning a cheaper model recently that was very disappointing, this kettle is excellent and worth the money. I wanted a cordless kettle and was attracted to this one based on the name and the design.
The kettle comes cleanly away from the base without binding and raising the base off of the counter top. The cord stays wrapped, hidden underneath and it has the most amazing plug. It is a snap to unplug for anyone with arthritis or who has trouble gripping things tightly.
I love how the water level indicator is lit with a beautiful blue light. I can use it in low light and know that I have enough water heating. It is fast and shuts off when ready.
My hat is off to the person that designed this kettle with its smooth opening top.

Cheaply made
by janeforster ,Jul 06 '08
Pros: Look great
Cons: Doesn't function properly
Bought this kettle and when I took it out of the box, I found the stainless steel side was flawed with black in the grain of the metal. When I went to use the replacement kettle, I found that the automatic boil shut-off did not work. I felt the stainless steel on this kettle was poorly made. I did not have confidence that the mechanics of it would last long either, if it did not function properly from the first use. I returned it and bought a different model by Breville from Starbucks Coffee. I believe they are the only ones in Victoria, BC that sell the Breville Moda BKE-450XL. The BKE450XL kettle works wonderfully. It has all the same features as the SK500XL except for the illuminated view window.

Forever to boil...and a hazard!
by alexstuff ,Mar 15 '09
Pros: Looks nice.
Cons: Automatic shut-off doesn't always work.
We liked the look of this and the functionality of the lid - which is easy to open. However, we found that the water took FOREVER to boil and would not shut off once a rolling boil was reached. The final straw was when the kettle did not shut off and acutally boiled for so long that all the water evaporated! Unsafe! We thought maybe we had a defective one, so we took it back and tested another one at the store. The water reached a rolling boil and continued to stay on for another 5 minutes before the automatic shut-off kicked in. Needless to say, we didn't replace ours with a new one. A shame, because we have other Breville appliances that work great.
