As avid bikers, a child trailer was one of our first baby purchases (yes, even before our son was born!). We looked seriously at both the Burley and the Chariot Cougar, and actually bought both of them from REI and brought them home to compare. While the ...
Pros: Lightweight.
Easy hitch mechanism.
Robust build.
Good weather-proofing.
Quick-release wheels. Cons: Terrible tyres.
Flag can only go on one side, poor stitching.
Helmet pocket too taut.
I live in Cambridge, England, which is a very cycle-friendly town. I bought the Burley Solo online, to do the school-run with my daughter who's four. THE GOOD: The priority for me was safety and an easy hitch system. The Solo fulfilled both. It's ...
Pros: Sturdy and safe, great hitch system. Cons: Hard to collapse, minimal use as a jogger.
I bought a used Burley Solo when my daughter was about nine months old. I had done a lot of research on trailers, and liked the Burley because of the hitch system. It attaches to the bike frame near the rear axle, rather than behind the seat or onto a...
Pros: maneuverability, easy to hitch, fold & store Cons: price does not match quality, slack fabric, rattles, hitch problems
August 2009Time for the annual update based upon actual use of the product. My Milena is now 3 and already the trailer is a bit cramped. In her preschool photo, she is of average height for a girl so I would expect a bit more room. I ...
Pros: works great and can be converted to stroller Cons: kids may outgrow to quickly.
Being a bike rider for many years was my greatest pleasure, then i found myself pregnant! i decided that to continue with my bicycling i would need to have a trailer for my young daughter. we received the burley for Christmas.
How the hitch works (or doesn't) by griswolm ,Mar 26 '06
Pros: Hard to say yet, seems roomy but small. Cons: Standard hitch won't fit my bike, making it less useful.
I just got this a few hours ago and wanted to pass along what I have learned. The standard hitch mechanism is designed to slide back into the "v" created by the bike tubes where your rear wheel connects. On my bike (a specialized hardrock sport) there is an additional frame re-enforcement near the bottom of the "v" which stops the hitch from sliding back very far. Because of this, the hitch will pop-off the bike relatively easily. I don't have the alternative replacement hitch, which is sold by Burley, but I suspect it would solve the problem. It's an additional $40.
Beyond that, I haven't had a chance to actually take it out. From other reviews and generally looking it over it seems good, except for the flag pouch which looks a little flimsy. If I get an alternative hitch I'll update my review with more information.
Pros: lightweight, ease of hookup, roominess for child as well as other supplies, big tires Cons: The only downfall is lack of air movement/ventilation through the cart
We purchased the Burley Solo when our son was 6 months old. We use the Burley daily with weather permitting in Central Illinois. We have owned the Burley for 3 months, and have not used the other stroller since our new purchase. We purchased the jogger attachment, but since we use the burley as a stroller during the week, and the bicycle attachment on weekends, we barely use the jogger. When pushing the stroller, one hardley notices. When pulling the trailer via bicycle, one hardley notices unless you are on a 20 mile ride. The bicycle hitch is easy and quick to attach. The burley trails the bike nicely, and is not any wider than the bicyle handle bars. We purchased the trailer through one of the internet vendors listed on the site and saved a sizeable amount vs a local retailer. Shipping was free, and no sales taxes due to an out of state purchase
Expensive, but well worth it! by carameloh ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: Light, safe, extremely durable and cozy for the little one! Cons: Expensive, hitch is a pain to hook up and tears up paint
I just love this bike trailer. I have the newer model which is much better than the older one. It is very easy to fold/unfold and you can't even feel it behind you when riding it is so light. My 19 m/o loves it also. She can see everything as we ride, the seat is super comfy for her, and she has lots of room for toys. I do agree with some of the other reviews that the hitch needs a little redesigning. It does fit most bikes, but is a pain to hook up and can tear up the paint. You can also use it as a jogging stroller, but I think it just looks silly doing that. For the cost of the stroller accessory, you could buy a decent "real" jogging stroller.
Pros: light weight, cool, weatherproof, low rolling resistance, attractive colors Cons: standard hitch is bulky - one size fits all, but not well
I love this trailer! It's light and pulls easily; I can hardly feel it behind me. The standard hitch did fit all my bikes, but not well. I ordered the alternative hitch and am very, very satisfied with it. I intend to call Burley to recommend that the alternative hitch become the standard hitch - it swivels better, allows the use of my kickstand, and is a much lighter and cleaner design.
